Glad i saw this post. I'm picking up my first bike tomorrow (05 Dyna Super glide Sport) from a local repair shop. He has offered me an extended warranty. He is giving me a 30 day warranty but says I have to decide before the 30 days are up. My question is should I take this probably 3rd party warranty or go to a local HD dealer?
A big mistake I made was not knowing that the extended warranty
1) Can be negociated in price
2) Can be bought anytime before the expiration of the factory two year warranty
3) Can be bought from any dealer....see #1 .
We bought the extended warranty because of the known cam chain tensioner problem in the TC 88's. Once I installed gear drives, and having had no problems at all in three years, we cancelled the warranty and received a pro rata amount back.
Thanks for replys everyone. A lot of useful information.
I tell you what, if I were about to purchase a bike and read all these people that say the warranty is worth it because this broke, and that went out, and that fell off, I would think there are a lot of lemons out there. Even if you do ride a lot of miles those are some seroiuus problems going on. 3 Harley's and I never had anywhere close to the issues I heard about on this thread. Knock on wood
Bought a Deuce new in '06, bought the extended warranty, ran out this april. No real issues and though, I got some relief with the warranty on a couple of miner issues, it was nothing close to the cost of the warranty. Gonna start doing most of my own wrenching, keeping my fingers crossed that i don't screw the pooch. Figure even if I run into an issue down the road it won't cost more than I've already wasted on a sheet of paper.
It's kind of like health insurance we can complain how much it costs until we have a $100,000 operation then boy ain't we glad we have it. It's all boils down to pay a little now or a lot later my 2 cents. I bought mine when they delivered my SG.
I want to thank everyone for there comments. I picked up the bike this past friday. Was happy to find out the bike had 1.5 years left on its extended warranty. So for now I had that transfered to my name, knowing I can always purchase extended warranty later.
Well, I have an update. Got home from a ride yesterday, as I was pulling into the garage I noticed a load rattling sound. It sound like the baffe inthe left pipe was loose ad making noise. Was getting late, so I figured I would check it out after work the next day. Got home from work and fired her up. Now its more of a growling noise coming frm the primary would be my best guess. Off to local dealer tomorrow. The fgure how to get the bike there. I'm glad this bike still has warranty left. Funny, because I got my card and a letter today saying transfer was coplete. I'm deffinetly going to purchase extended warranty before this one runs out.
