Grease fitting - 1/4" by 28 - make sure you get the 28 thread count - it isn't as common and the auto stores will try and sell you the 20 threads per inch,
a 90 degree probably won't work - not enough clearance for the 90 degree bend - get the 45 degree instead
Have a small thin washer available - the grease nimple will probably be pointed toward the front of the bike when you initally try to seat it; putting on a thin washer will direct it towards the rear....
Lots and lots of grease. I pumped in about 1/2 a tube,
Thanks for the info, I need to do that to mine. I have a flexible hose on one of those cheap air powered grease guns that I use now. I cover up the tank and engine guard with towels to avoid scratching then I bend the heck out of that hose to get it to pop onto the fitting. Sometimes I still dont get it straight and grease goes all over the place. What a mess.
If you have your fairing outer shell off for any reason, before you button back up grease your steering head. Real easy from that direction.
Sure am glad that was changed in 2011. Straight shot in.
I must have gotten a leftover zerk then !........The thing is why did I really bother anyway, I think once you grease them up to full your good for about 30 yrs. ... LOL.

I probably wouldn't have bothered with mine for a long time except when I took it in for the 1000 mile service it was pumped full of that low temp grease and it kept blowing out all over my ride.
Bought 2 tubes of high temp grease and got busy with the grease gun. Took about 2 hours, pulled the outer faring so I could get to the top to keep wiping the grease off. Took a plastic handle out of a cake spatula cut a 45 degree on the end which is about 3/8 wide and 1/8 thick , worked great for cleaning away the expelled grease. Then use about half a box of Q tips . She was clean . And no more grease all over the bike when I ride.
Thanks for the tip. Was debating yesterday how to get at those fittings, looked at Autozone for a hose extension or a 90 degree connector for the gun. Never thought about changing the fitting.
