+2 with texasbowhunter's advice, his methodolgy has worked in my case
my 2cents: Amsoil #10 has worked well for me - 10oz. 13" OEM shocks,180lb. rider, 8-12lbs. of air. Willing to try other fluids...lol
make that x3
I filled it with 10 wt. and after trying a few different things I ended up riding it and letting the excess out like the others. still playing with air. Currently have 2 or 3 lbs of air. A better ride for sure. I only put about 100 or miles on but it is better. No doubt it is not as good as aftermarket set up, but I just don't have that kind of money to spend right now.
I put 15wt shock oil in my rears and 10wt shock oil in my forks. running max air PSI under the manuals 2up chart. I needed to heat up the 15wt oil to get it to flow into the shocks at a reasonable rate.
At 70,000 plus miles on my 2000 RG it was time to do something! So I bought an 09 and later set off EBAY. They're apparently softer than the 08 and earlier model, but with 16 to 18 lbs of air the ride is excellent and the bottoming out is gone.
Fortunately for me, I'm a bit taller and there are tons of stock height shocks available there from guys wanting to lower their bikes.
