Default Clutch Cable Problem

About a week ago I replaced the drive belt on my 07 flh and inspected the clutch plates at the same time. They looked new. Today I decided after approx. 300 miles since the work to recheck the drive belt tension and readjust the cluth. I followed the clutch adjusting procedure in the book and when doing the final adj. on the clutch cable I heard a slight pop from the right hand side and I now have no adjustment and the clutch rod has no movement. I'm assuming that the clutch cable somehow came out of the ball ramp assembly on the tranny side. The outer cable sheath will come out of the clutch lever ***. a full inch. Does this sound like a common problem? Is there enough clearance to pull the right hand clutch cover with out pulling the exhaust system. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Mike

Stock exhaust crossover? It is way easier to pull the exhaust than ***** with trying to loosen and finagle around it. However, some have had success doing just that, but not me. I've always had to drop it. You can put the scoot's wheels on 2x lumber and lean it over to the left on the jiffy stand so you don't lose but a few drops of tranny fluid so you don't have to drain the fluid depending on how few miles you have on the fluid. You definitely should pull the tranny side cover and check things out. Sounds like that is where your problem is.

Dawg, Thanks for the reply. Is this a common occurance or did I possibly just introduce too much slack into the cable?

One or more of the ***** probably came out of the ramp. I had the same issue but I put the bike up on pieces of 2x4's and let it lean over big time towards the kickstand side. I let it sit like that overnight and the next day by some miracle, they fell back into place on their own. It's worth a try before ripping everything apart.

Thanks for the reply Glide. I already have half of it apart and I'm the type of guy that wants to know what and why. At my age I probably won't remember it a month from now but I've always been that way. Be safe over the holiday. Mike

69CJ,

I don't know if I'd lean the bike way over like that on its side for the price of a quart of Redline Shockproof...that being said, it's your bike, your call.

The service manual says to remove the right side exhaust. I just looked at my bike (with a V&H 2 into 1 propipe HO), and there is no way in hell I can access all the screws on the clutch release cover with the pipe on.

Good luck.

Bronson, I agree with you and Dawg. The exhaust is coming off.

Yup, off comes the exhaust. No way to reach those bottom bolts. You will probably leave some blood on your bike, lol. Oh, and for your problem - check where the clutch cable screws into the tranny - might have popped the nipple off the end of the cable somehow: that part is weak as hell.

Oh, and fair warning. Do NOT misread your manual when re-installing. All those bolts and cables on the tranny are in INCH pounds, not FOOT pounds (that's hooker tight vs girlfriend tight for the uneducated). Oh and that's also a $100 mistake if you tighten to ft/lbs - trust me, I know...

Good luck!
