Default Tour Pack Luggage Rack

I am putting a tour pack luggage rack on my '05 Ultra. It is the preimum rack.

Any tips for getting it aligned correctly? Any do's and do not's that I might need to know about before it is too late?

Any comments from you guys that have done it before will be appreciated.

Get some painter's masking tape, do your marking and drilling on the tape so that u dont scratch the surface. Make sure the rack is spaced a little away from the seat... u dont want your passenger to sit on the seat and feel a metal tube in the butt. The ridges on the top of the touring box are angled, so dont base your hole drill pattern on how far the front and rear holes are from the ridge - stand back and make sure it is aligned with the bike's center line.

Mine came with a template that you cut out for what ever rack you bought. Put masking tape on box then tape template to box, drill holes. Make it easy on yourself and make the holes a tad larger than 1/4". Makes it a lot easier to line up. Goe easy on the RTV sealant cause it's a bear to get off the paint.

Measure 3 - 4 times before you drill. Suggestion about masking tape is good idea. I even put it inside the tour pack about where I thought the holes would come through. On older bikes - i.e. fiberglass bags & tour pack - this is helpful as it doesn't allow fiberglass to splinter as bad. On newer bikes - i.e. plastic - not as big of a problem.
Inside bags/tour pack - black = plastic.
Inside - white = fiberglass.

I've put 2 tour packs on 2 bikes and they both led great. I also put a bead of silicone around the washers inside the tour pack before tightening all the way down and then another bead around the bolts inside tour pack. Have never had any leakage.

Thanks for the quick response from all!!!

I will take your advice and make the install. I did get a template and will use it.

I think this is one of those projects where you measure twice (maybe three times) and cut/drill once.

Again, thanks for your help.

I used the supplied template marked with marker let it set and kept coming back looking at it till it looked like it was even.

Just make sure you want it on there! I wanted one too until I got it on there. It makes the bike look taller in back and with a short shield in front it looks funny. I like the carrying capacity but kinda regret the look.
