Default 09 street glide needs new primary chain

OK guys I ordered a service manual but its not here yet. So what all is involved in changing the primary chain and readjusting the new one on a 2009 street glide with 2400 miles?

You ask why it needs a new one....... the bike was wrecked. It was lightly hit in the chrome primary cover but when I removed cover to replace the cover which had a hole, I noticed the primary chain has a small chunk chipped out of the chain. It needs replaced.

Is this a major job to change and readjust? I am mechanicly inclined just need info on what is involved in doing it. Let me know if you have advise or tips/tricks on it. Thanks

Auto tensioner and put it on. It is very simple.

You need a locking bar to lock the sprockets. Remember the clutch hub nut is left hand threaded so it is righty loosey, lefty tighty. I'd do the SE comp while in there. As Drew stated, it has an auto tensioner so just reassemble and let the tensioner do its thing.

You've got good advice so far, use the manual for the rest.

You could also consider swapping out to the 49t clutch basket and fix the crappy gearing on the 07-08 bikes.

It's not a big job to just replace the primary chain, but if you replace the compensator you'll need to either grind a little bit off the inner primary to provide clearance to remove the rotor, or remove the inner primary, which you'd probably want the service manual to do.

So is the stock 09 tensioner bad? Why replace it? I just want to replace the chain. Do I need special tools?

I wouldn't replace the 09 tensioner. It suffices. I would replace the compensator with the SE comp though. The stock comp sucks. Only special tools for replacing the chain needed is something like a flat metal bar to lock the sprockets to remove the nuts and then the proper size sockets. Oh and of course, torque wrenches
