I ride a 97 Roadking, EFI with the mm system. with 75,000 miles of never running right, acceleration stumble, varying idle speeds, exhaust popping/cracking, poor mileage. Every shop in my area, HD and Independent have tried to tune this machine, with poor results.
Not the bike's fault. Too bad there wasn't a knowledgeable tuner in your area.
Took the bike in this morning and got it on the dyno. It took a good 3 hours to straighten the thing out. First run was like 65hp and 80 ft lbs of torque. Last pull was 78hp and 88ft lbs of torque! Thats pretty respectable for a stock 88" with Andrews 21N cams, V&H Pro Pipe and a SE air cleaner. The peak hp was about 3000 rpms and it holds it all the way to around 5500 rpm. Same with the torque then it drops off. He took it well above 6000! Ill scan the graph and post it. It rides so much better. Pulls good in every gear. Sounds better and i should get alot better mpg. Im so glad I did this. I was so close to getting a very expensive delphi conversion....this only cost me $200 plus tax. Im a firm believer in the tune now.
I rode a tank out yesterday at 65 to 70mph and got 36mpg. I guess there was a little bit of hot roddin here and there but for the most part I was cruisin.
Mine always seems to go up after I mess with the tps or throttle. I have had it start out @ 30 & gone up to 40 after about 600 miles or so. Just this last time my mileage went up from 36 to 39.5 on the second tank. But I used to get 45-50 so am trying to get it back to that & still keep the performance. Good luck
Toby

What exactly are your needs/wants?
Are you a racer? Do you seek max. performance?
excellent. too much mod, upgrade, dyno, remap, huba this , huba that, talk going on. its great weather...time to ride and leave the upgrades for winter.

Every shop in my area, HD and Independent have tried to tune this machine, with poor results. Three weeks ago I gave in and had an independent shop convert to CV carb. What a difference, I should have converted the day I bought it. Took it on a 1000 mile trip to Knoxville, TN and it never skipped a beat. I know the Mechanic took the fuel pump out of the tank, drilled the two bungs and installed a Pingle petcock, Dyna 2000 I ignition/coil. a used CV carb with Dyna-Jet and some wiring. I dont know what year your bike is but if it is the older MM system don't waste your time and money, go for the carb. I liked the EFI starting but the CV starts every bit as easy. If you need more info, contact me and I'll put you in touch with the shop that did my work...for a helluva lot less than the aftermarket conversions. Good luck.
I would like to know the name and number of the shop you used. I have a 97 ultra and have wanted to convert for years. Today I started the bike and it searches for an idle cold and won't idle when warm. I've pulled fuses and reset the idle for the last time. Please reply to dbailey1111@gmail.com if you don't mind as it goes straight to my phone and i don't have much use for computers right now, dell or magnetti marelli.. LOL... Thanks in advance, Dave.
Very informative thread about the MM EFI system. I will be picking up a 98 EFI Ultra tomorrow and have been very concerned about some of the not so positive comments about tuning the MM system. It performed just fine on my test ride so I will just have to see what the future brings. My understanding is that they either work right or they work like crap and if it is the latter it can be a major headache.
