I have recently purchased a stock 06 Ulra with 14000 miles stone stock and would welcome some input on upgrades.
I've done some searches and understand there are a lot varying opinions on this. I do realize it's an 88 and am fine with that, I bought what I could afford and don't have any dreams of making is something it's not. I like to take 100 to 200 mile rides in Michigan with a few trips "up north" for a 500 or so mile weekend.
My question is can I make upgrades In steps with a plan? Can you put pipes on first not getting performance upgrade but sound, bling and heat benefits, and do mapping or controller upgrades later?
Is there a screaming eagle upgrade for an 88?
I've read some on seats. We took a 200 mile ride one day and was thinking of a seat upgrade? Yes I do know ride more and where under armors.
You can put slip ons on without having to remap or upgrade anything else and that will give you some noise. I would suggest after that though to get a stage 1 air cleaner and a tuner and that will give you a little more umph and less heat. Then I would consider a good bagger cam that is torquey and do the SE hydraulic upgrade kit when you do the cams to take the worry out of the tensioners. Run it like that until you have the mileage on it warranting a freshen up and then do a big bore, etc.
When I bought my 06 Ultra, I had pipes, AC and a stage one download done before it left the dealer. Rode like that for 42k without a single problem. When I decided it was time to change out the cam chain tensioners, went with the hydraulic upgrade, while it was open decided to go to 95" with cams and added a retro fit PCV from Fuel Moto. Its like a hole new bike. 8k on the upgrade so far and looking forward to every ride
You got a nice bike there,so plan carefully get your "dreams book" from your HD dealer, look at all the parts/upgrades that you would like to have and make a priority list according to your budget.I bought an '06 Ultra with 2000 mi. 10 months ago and $6000 later still ordering new parts, last addition was the LED lights set up.Have fun!
