I was going to pick up a quart of oil to keep on my bike just in case I needed it. I was reading the manual and it spoke of oil for diesel engines I think. So I asked the dealer and they told me I needed to get it from them and that they made no recommendations other than that....Well I know that when I had the 10k Mile sevice I had the oil changed and they put in synthetic oil so I need someone to tell me what kind I should pick-up at a auto parts store....
if you were to use harley Syn, in all 3 holes , you would only need to carry 1 bottle of that
Yeah, but Harley seems to have cooled on that idea. I wondered about using a 20w50 oil in the trans. While they recommended it in all 3 places on my 05 Classic, my owners manual and service manual on my 06 Ultra now state the Formula Plus gear and primary lube in the trans and primary. I use Mobil 1 VTwin 20w50 which you can get at AutoZone for less than the HD Synth3 at the dealer.
Syn3 is crap, not even a true syn. oil, and harley has now backed off putting it in the trans, and is back to telling people to use their formula 1 for trans and primary.
Interesting thing. I went the other way and put Redline products in all three holes. I asked the dealer's service manager what I should use if I need to top off and can't get my hands on any Redline. He told me a top qulaity synthetic like Movil 1 V-Twin would be fine, but just make sure I don't use Syn 3. I wish I'd have questioned him a little further on that but I was in a bit of a hurry at the time. Anybody know why that may be?
