Question 09 UCEG Need best rear pillion seat/cushion Help!

Hi,
Newbie here..... I have a 09 UCEG and my wife has problems with pain while riding, especially if I hit a bump in the road. She was diagnosed with arthritis in her hip. I'd like to hear from anyone who has experienced using either air or gel seat cushions to relieve situations like this. OR any other ideas?
Thanks a million in advance!!
Jim

The first thing I would do is check your rear shock air pressure when she's riding with you.
We've found that we don't have to run the high pressure the manual suggests for two up riding.
My wife has PAD in her left leg and is sensitive to road shock and vibration.
I'm 155 and she's about 130 , so we can run as low as 28 lbs in the rear shocks and be fine for comfort/handling.
Maybe have her try a fake sheepskin pad and see if softer is the way to go for comfort.
She may find that she needs the pad to be harder , but try softer first.
We've found the stock 09 ultra seat to be the best we've had on the bike for all around comfort.
I had a mustang seat on our last bike and I loved it , she hated it , so it's a hit and miss deal sometimes.
If you're larger than us , try starting at 40 lbs rear shocks and drop 2 lbs per ride till you get bottoming and then go back up a few.
Seemed to work for us so far.

Thanks Mick,
My wife is abt 180 and I am 290. I'm 6'5" and she is 5'11" so we are much larger than the two of you. You know, the Harley Store told us they set the shocks at 24#.
I just bought a pump from harley and I'll be setting them up around 40# as you suggested. I am still considering getting an AirHawk cushion for her.
Thanks for your reply and help.

I got the airhawk air cushion . Once the air pressure was adjusted to the 'just right inflation' (meaning not overfilled) she experienced an improvement.

For some reason, (I will never be able to explain) she wont use the cushion if we are only going to be out for a short duration (up to a few hours) but I get the moan if we hit a bump.

Last week I bought a pro pad gel insert for passenger. I had a local upholstery shop install it . It feels pretty comfy to me . We'll be testing it out this weekend. I'm going to pack the airhawk just in case she wants to try try using both. So we'll see how it all works out.

Thanks ZZZ.... let me know what she says about them.
I was thinking a little more on the AirHawk system. If she leans at all wouldn't the air move around the small cushions which would cause a slipping effect? or an unbalanced condition? Maybe Gel pads are a better choice ?

Mick.... I pumped up the shocks to 40# and the ride was much better. Still need a pad though.

All, Since she is so tall, maybe moving the trunk back 2 or 3 inches would help.
Factory specs won't allow more than a half inch adjustment if I remember right. Maybe something aftermarket?
Reason I'm thinking this is she told me after this eve's ride that when I scoot up toward the tank she can close her legs more and it relieves the pain. Problem with that is it's hard on the family jewels!!!

Cool

There are a lot of bandages out there to 'help' with problems like you mention, the difficulty is working a way through them to get a good solution, without trying everything on the market first!

Starting from the ground up, there are three areas for improving ride. 1. Better tyres will improve comfort by giving a smoother ride than the stock tyres. Avon and Metzeler get great reviews (I use Avons). 2. By all means do what you can to get the best out of your stock shocks, but if you can't get the improvements you want, don't hesitate to bin them. Forget the rest, get custom-built Ohlins from HDF sponsor Motorcycle Metal. They have transformed my Glide. 3. Finally as far as the seat is concerned, there are firms that will alter and improve your stock seat, for much less than a replacement. They ger regular mentions on HDF.

Hope that gives you food for thought. Give your wife a hug from her supporters here on HDF!
