The Girlfriend and I are wanting to start taking camping trips on the EG. Does anyone have experience towing a trailer with a touring bike and what kind of trailer do you have. I am looking at the one from Harbor Freight. Cheep and has some good reviews.
I bought the $379 Harbor freight aluminum sided trailer, got a hitch and wiring from Chromeworld. I took a 180 mile round trip to a rally in the next state. The trailer held up OK, on the way back I loaded more weight over the axle, and towards the tongue and I didn't know it was back there at 70 mph. I plan on getting a more expensive trailer next year with at least 12" wheels, as the 8 inch wheels make me nervous although they are rated to 85 mph. It was great to be able to take the large tent, shower tent, and bigger cooler and grill without making someone drive the truck. Pulling the trailer did suck some of the fun out of riding, but was worth it to keep the wife happy with snivel gear.
I have pulled several different trailers over the years and currently have an american legend trailer and it is by far the best that I have pulled. In my opinion I will only own trailers with torsion suspension from now on, as they do not hop like straight axles. Spend the money to get an isolator kit for the wiring.
I have a trailer made from the HF frame, a sheet of aluminum diamond plate for a bed, and a cartop luggage carrier for the box. It pulls great.
There are some great articles online about tweaking the HF trailer (gaining more tongue length by mounting it upside down, etc) online, just do some googling.
You can save a ton of money over a factory trailer this way.
And you might want to look in the trailer forum here for more info, too.
Pull an Alum MCT, McHitch and isolator for lights. Came with a swivel hitch.
Put 1000 miles on it so far. Ride different when pulling. Slower take-offs, slower stops. Keep your eyes busy watching the cages..
There's a forum section for trailers and towing
Camping with the bike is awesome.
We have an Escapade trailer and take it with every chance we get. On a recent trip of
Rt. 66 another rider paid us a nice compliment, said our trailer was the best tracking trailer he had ever seen. Always remember the extra weight you will be towing.
I tow a HF trailer with car top carrier. I shortened the length and width of the frame, but lengthened the tongue. Tows very well. Hardly know its there.
