Default what to look for in primary case

My 2008 stock flhx (20000 miles) has developed a tick at around 2000 rpm. From everything I have read I think I should look in the primary area. If the compensator bolt is not loose what should I look at and what might I see as far as indications of something wrong. Thanks in advance for your ideas and help.

Does the tick speed up when the RPM's are raised?

Tick increases with rpms. Does not change with clutch pulled in. After about 5 minutes of riding below the 2000 rpms the tick stops.

The chain stretches and will cause slack up and down as well as side to side so look for wear marks.

Sometimes the teeth on the tensioner ramps will wear and cause the rig to slip (mine would do that until I took a fine file and sharpened the teeth)...look there as well.

Good luck.

The primary tensioner is operated by oil psi. I believe.....if, after riding a bit, it stops, I makes me think, it "finally" gets pumped up enough to take up the chain slack.

So, it seems to me, you will need to take the primary cover off, take a look, and possibly replace the primary tensioner, and check the torque on the nuts in there while it is open.

The tick is more than likely the chain smacking the cover.

If you are using a multi-viscosity oil in there, it may be that the oil is too thin, but as it heats up, the oil is thicker, and thus is sufficient to pump the adjuster up. So, if you are using 10W30 in their, and switch to 20W50 and it stops, then it wanted thicker oil.....probably shouldn't matter, so then again, it could mean the adjsuter needs replacement.
