So while he is making this appt for my bike and his wifes Heritage he gets to talking to the mechanic/shop owner about what oil they have been using or will be using.

Now, it's always been Harley oil at this shop, but just the other day they had a 113 motor that they put Royal Purple in and it dropped the temps 20 degrees

Now the shop does not sell the oil, so they don't make a dime off of this "upgrade" as you have to bring the oil with you if you want that, but they were so impressed with the drop in temps, they are thinking of stocking that oil and offering it for a slight increase over the std services b/c the harley oil is almost as expensive and its only about $1 difference in price per quart.

So here is the question, have any of you out there seen similar results for engine temp drops in one versus the other?
No amsoil 20/50 here

If you ever been to a drag strip, in the pits, very close to the cars, you will smell the oil blow by on those engines. To me its a sweet smell, not like regular oil burning. I would say 95% of the drag cars were using Royal Purple in them race engines. Must be a reason.

I have run it,,,,,,standard 20/50 and 85/140 in the tranny..its just stupid expensive compared to comparable oils..so I shyed away..and its a waste in the primary....and 20 degrees is extreme and I dont believe it.....compared to mobile 1 mine was 2 degrees cooler at the cylinders.....

I've always used RP 20w 50 in my engine. I needed to change oil and they were out of RP so I tried Lucas synthetic. I have an oil temp gauge and the Lucas ran 10 degrees hotter and the engine made more noise. When I got back from my weekend trip I dumped it and went back to RP.

Good stuff!

Ran it in sport bike never considered the HD. They bought our old shop in Porter Tx I used to go get it direct. It was cooler running in my Race bike.
I might give it a go in the SG and I have an infrared temp gauge to try on it.

as I mentioned that was on a 113 motor not a stocker

I think all the feedback on here has been great, some folks with hands on experience and from the majority of the info it seems like a no brainer

as for the cost - my buddy just picked up a case for $90 - that's a little better then $8 per quart, and Harley is like $6.50 for normal and $8.50 for Syn 3 so costs are equal no matter how you slice it.

If you are speaking about Mobile 1 or something else yeah you can save some $$$, but on an oil change we are talking the difference in $10
