Default Gritty oil change

Just flushed my oil prior to a long road trip and was amazed at what I got out. Because I wanted to check the amount of oil that came out I poured it into a milk jug. I left it over night so anything in the oil settled to the bottom.

When I poured the oil out of the jug there was quite a lot of particles in the bottom the size of large grains of sand (not the fine stuff). I ran a magnet across it to see if any was ferrous but nothing stuck (I guess that's a good thing). If I had to guess I'd say it's carbon - but there's no way carbon from the pistons can make it to the sump.

Any ideas?

send some of it out for oil analysis....they charge about 30 bucks for premo and about 20 for basic. the stuff could be aluminum, sand particles, brass (some engines have brass valve guides), etc.

I'm subscribing to the theory that since this is oil from the entire change there was grit around the outside of the bike near the filter that got into the pan. Don't know why I didn't think of this the first time! Must be paranoid.

There was a lot of bronze present when I changed out the Primary + from my tranny at 1300 miles. This was soon after the dealer did the 1K.Went with Amsoil Severe Gear.

Did not see anything when I changed the motor oil at 5K.

I changed the tranny and engine at the same time. Perhaps bronze is from tranny? Beats me.
