When I traded my pristine '05 RKC for an '11 SG, ABS was the deciding factor. Yeah, the 103" engine is what got me thinking of trading to begin with. The 6-speed is nice. But ABS is what pushed me over the edge. I hope I never need it, but if I do, the price will pale in comparison to saving my bacon.
well here on the forum enough is never enough said.
Personally I didn't care one way or the other. However when considering the ultra without it and the limited with it (this was in 2010) coupled with the rest of the limited's upgrades it was a good buy.
Now that I have it I have to say yes it is worth it and not just as a added value on resale.
Saved my life.
A crash happened infront of me on the interstate while doing 75mph.
All the cars breaked hard and twisted to a stop. I was able to break
and stear between two stopped cars infront of me.
Without the ABS....I would of skid into the back of one of them or put the bike down.
I do alot of two up riding with my wife. I also own a Goldwing in addition to my Ultra. I read especially on the GW forum about how ABS makes you a lazy riding and how the experienced rider practices emergency stopping.....blah blah blah.......My Ultra weighs over 900 lbs and with my 110lb wife and myself 210lb we go at 320lbs plus gear. It makes no sense to me why anyone would not want the added ability to stop 1300lbs of moving motorcycle. How many times have you heard people say "I locked em up and that was it". I bought it to protect my wife.
Off road, adventure bike.....keep the abs but big touring.....hell yes buy it.
I have a GL1800 without ABS unfortunately. We were on a ride last year and my buddy who has a BMW touring bike with ABS had to stop for a deer which pranced in front of him. If he had not had ABS that would've been it. I travel quite a ways behind the rider in front of me and I barely had time to stop. IMHO all bikes should come with ABS. Also, he had to push his tight fitting full face Shoei helmet back up on his head because it rotated down upon the braking. This is true, I was there!Dene
