Default Cam help

Hello All:
I have a 99 EGC the bike was new to me this spring, and came with the big bore kit installed about 10,000 ago. I'm thinking the cam tensioners have probably not been converted to the hydraulic style ( at least I have nothing telling me they were) I also can't confirm via paperwork that when the BB kit was installed that the cams were upgraded. So, after reading and searching I'm still confused what I want to do. I need help selecting a cam and then understanding what parts I need to make the change and upgrade the tensioners. I will have my indy do the work, but he's talking Gear drives, and on and on. I just want a good solid reliable build. The motor has a Power commander with Fuel moto tune, True duals with VH slip ons. We ride 2 up alot with about 50/50 split between in town and highway runs averaging 75 mph. I appreciate any input. I'm not looking for radical here, just more power and reliable.

thanks in advance

If you going with the late motel cam drive, try the S-E 204 or 211 cams for a reliable engine.
If you go with Gear drive look at Andrews 26 cam or the S&S 510. Don't Get talked into
some big wild thing that is not ride able, JMO.

With a 99 can I go gear drive without alot of added cost i.e. do I need to worry about crank runout? I agree we don't need anything wild, just reliable and of course faster than my buddies stock 96'er lol

OK, I'm thinking I jinxed myself with this thread. Last night while out for a cruise my low oil light came on and then started to flicker on and off based on RPM's etc. We shut her down and checked the oil, it was fine. Today I went ahead and changed the oil since we did ride through a pretty bad rain storm last weekend with open breather ( the oil looked fine). Started it up same thing oil light stayed on, pressure was normal on gauge though. I went ahead and changed the sending unit, no luck. So I hooked up an external gauge and the pressure coming out of the block is 25 pis at idle, and tops about 40ish at 3,000 rpm. I pulled my schematic out and can't find how the light is wired, thinking maybe bad ground, but the not sure. the light will go out above 3,000 rpm in 5th gear? Did some searches could possibly be cam tensioners worn? Does this sound like a place to start looking? The bike runs strong, no weird noises etc.

thanks for the insight

cut your old oil filter apart! Look for bits of plastic or god forbid pieces of metal.

If you want to check your tensioners you have to open the cam chest and do a visual inspection. You're gonna need a dental mirror to check the back one.

alot of big bore kits have stock CAMs, we call those kits stage I kits, nothing wrong with that. Stage II kits include new CAMS. My advice, before you go mod crazy, ride the bike for a while to shake out all the bugs....sounds like you already found some, and just focus on repairs rather than mods.

Default Pictures of my cam tensioners

Well got bored so pulled the inspection cover off, here are a couple of pictures of my front tensioner. Doesn't look like the hydraulic upgrade has been done but the front tensioner looks ok, need to get a mirror for the back one. Anyone have some insight. Should I just put her back together and start looking at possible wiring issue for the light???

That outer tensioner looks good. As said b4 get a real small mirror to look at the rear one. If it looks like the front ride it the rest of the season and do your cam change over the winter. Light sounds like a poss ground issue, pull off outer fairing and check wires. As for a cam choice if you do allot of 2up I'd go w/ andrews 26, put em in mine last winter w/hydraulic upgraded tensioners and am very happy.

My RK had 20k Miles, front tensioner looked good......inside tensioner was worn - 60/70%. Fixn to do the upgrade myself.

Get a small dental mirror from walgreens or cvs to look at the inside one.

Search on the forum......there is plenty of info/pics and even videos on the cam plate and cam upgrades.

atrain68 , a forum member, has some excellent info and pics on the cam upgrade/inspection, etc....
