Cylinder Head insert
So anyway here is my problem. I take my 2000 ultra to the dealership to have a rotor installed. Before I leave they page me and tell me they have found a real problem. It seems the spark plug on the rear head has vibrated loose and cannot be tightened down. I was told that they make an insert that is machined and will fix the problem, so far they cannot locate one.
Have any of you heard of such a device? I really dont wanna spring for a new head. Any help will be appreciated. Been without the scoot for 2 weeks and am going through withdrawal...

The insert is called a "Heli-Coil". They are made for most thread sizes and threadforms, including spark plugs. They are available at auto parts stores.
Google it.
Basically, the old thread is drilled out, then the hole is tapped with a SPI tap, the insert is installed, and the job is complete.
The stealership should be aware of them.

I think you should spring for new SE heads
of corse you will have to spring for newer
and bigger SE jugs and bigger SE pistons to
match the SE heads and then SE cams.
On second thought Heli coil will probley
work just fine, but you will have to agree
it was a nice thought

A Time Sert kit will cost about $150, plus the labor. I know there are some home remedies for drillling in place and keeping metal out of the combustion chamber but I don't trust any of them, particularly if a dealer tech is doing the work.
You can find a set of '06 or later take off heads for $200-$250. Buy a set and install them with a .030" head gasket. The heads flow better and the added .2 points of compression will make more difference than you think.
Then repair the damaged head and sell them on Ebay for $100. Or hang on to them in case you ever get the urge to build something with ported heads; you have the cores.
