RAM camera mount.. purchased from Touratech here in Seattle. Total cost for the entire 3 piece mount is $45. The camera is just a simple Cannon point and shoot SD1200 Elph bought used for $65 on ebay. It has video mode but not High Def so I’ll probably upgrade the camera sometime.
I'm finding that the biggest issue on any long run is with bug strikes. One little bug hit can really mess with the shutter "shields" on these little point and shoot cameras. So on this trip, I decided to use my Polycarb underwater housing that I also use for diving. This solves a multitude of issues including riding in the rain....(which we have plenty of) I just clean the housing lens at each stop. But.... you can also use any camera with a female tripod mount without the housing.
The RAM mount is a quality set-up for $45 and arm is rock solid and fully adjustable so it would allow the camera to shoot from behind the windshield and that might help to eliminate some of the bug and dust issues. Other than the ball handlebar mount that I will keep on the bike all the time, the extension and camera mount can be completely removed in about 10 seconds with no tools.
Here’s my old mount.
Here’s the new RAM mount.
Here’s a sample video I took this past Friday, North Cascades Hwy 20 , WA State…headed east.
Love ur old mount. Just the way i solve problems.
Taping that mount on your mirror is what i call creative.
Just the housing, ok will do the Job but looks, let say, "unusal".
I build a housing out of an old bike crypton lamp. Looks even more unusual than yours
Ram Mounts are the best and Vid looks cool. Just bought a Kodak Zx3 Vid (720 and HD).
With 16GB SDHC runs 3:30 on 720.
Maybe it's a regional thing, but a really good shade tree mechanic around my parts uses Duct Tape! LOL!!! Fixes EVERYTHING! We skip that thin black stuff!!
If you want to try a nicer looking handlebar mount look into getting the Kuryakyn 4024 or 4018 chrome P-Clamp (depends on handlebar diameter) and using with a RAM-B-273-M6U ball. You also would need to go to the hardware store for the matching bolt. I've been using this setup with my GoPro camera and it has worked great. There is also a RAM-B-337U ball that you might want to look at. I'm sorry I can't remember which of the two I used.
I have a camera ( ram mount ) on my handle bars.
Works great most of the time but at low speeds ( like in tight turns ) it vibrates to much.
I bought a Pentax camera that does 'Interval Shooting' ( takes a picture every ## of seconds ).
It's waterproof and works well. I set the interval at one picture every 60 seconds and forget it.
I get home and look over the pictures..
Suggest: get a digital camera that doesn't have a lens that moves in and out. They usually have a glass lens and you can wipe them clean each time you stop..
I also have the GoHeroPRO camera and like it. It's light and is a no thrills camera.
If you place it on your helmet using the supplied sticky plate you get some nice pictures.
The new version does HD or still pictures (5megapix)
I have the GoPro Hero cam too. Have just been sticking it to the top of my helmet. I like that ram mount. I think it's time for me to get one. Thanks for showing.
Clint, I have a similar setup using the same RAM mount but instead of the U-bolt around the handlebar I tried using a RAM mount that uses the hole in the left handgrip where a mirror would/could be mounted on my StreetGlide. Since my mirrors are in the fairing on the StreetGlide I thought using the "empty" hole in the handgrip would really be a cool way to go. Unfortunately despite my best attempts to minimize the vibration this setup has not worked out. The vids are just not acceptable for viewing with way to much shake. I am shooting with a Drift HD170 video camera. Using the helmet mount I get great videos but so far this handlebar mount setup I am trying to use is just not cutting it. I see your mount does use the U-bolt and your vids are MUCH better than anything I have been able to get with my setup. I guess my camera perched out there on the handlegrip is not as "solid" as the same mounted right on the handlebar. How much shake do you get at idle? Great vids!!
