I have the red sears jack and I never use my straps. Seems plenty stable, but I guess I could learn my lesson one day.

My Road King is currently on a red sears jack. It's up about 2 ft off floor, no straps. I looked at the book don't have any real solid instructions. Was just going to clean and polish my scoot. It's up and solid.

I have the pep boys jack and run a strap across the seat everytime I use it. I bought a seat belt pad you see at the parts store and run my strap through it then across the seat. I can tell the difference as the bike is more stable with the strap on it. I've done this at least a couple dozen times with different bikes.

I usually jack the bike up then put a couple of pieces of 2x4 under the front OR rear wheel then lower the jack just a bit to contact the wood. I try to set it up so the jack locks as the wood makes contact. This takes all the rocking away and leaves one wheel free to spin and work on. Of course don't but wood under both wheels otherwise the bike will fall off the jack!!!

I never use the straps for cleaning, But to let it sit up for a few months I think the straps are worth it. I jacked up the bike with the craftsman red and lowered it to the first catch notch on the jack to keep pressure off the hydrolic ram. Then I fed both straps through the frame rail right under the engine. Hook each strap into the eyelets at the end of the jack and tighten. It did make it feel alot more stable. A little bit of a PITA but there is alot of Money sitting up there and it is a nice piece of mind. Just my 0.02 worth.

You always want to get to the lowest point for center-of-gravity. If you choose the seat, as another post suggested, soft-ties are suggested. Equal distribution of tension is the key word here. We have to trailer bikes all the time, experience here.

I have short straps with rubber covered hooks that I hook onto the passenger foot boards.
