just thinking out loud. 07's we have 6 speed, 96" and no IDS. Wondering if the addition of the IDS was targeted to solve a problem related to crank stress.
IDS is available as a retrofit for '07 FLH models (40287-07), and many have them installed. It was originally offered as a fix for drivetrain clattering that most owners experienced and complained about, including me.
07 they changed the manufacturing process(and i bielive the supplier) they use a fixture to hold the halfs and just press them together.
This and, IIRC, the supplier and country of origin did change in '07 and there were quality issues with the new supplier that got sorted out before the '08 year but the process stayed the same.

Yeah they "fixed" the problem by changing how you measure the crank for run out.
The manufactures for Harley have gone way down hill as compared to back in 2000.
I was at a dealer going to talk to one of the guys, he was prepping in a new sporty, as I walked into the shop I swore he was working on a Suzuki, they just look cheap.
So '08 and newer have less potential crank problems?
Yeah, but not so much because of the flywheel assembly itself. They went to the electronic throttle to solve the problem. Lugging the bikes is a major cause of scissoring. The '07 and '08 models are over geared anyway, so lugging the motor is even easier to accomplish. Then when riders twist the throttle all the way open at low rpms in higher gears the lugging "hammers" the low end causing the press fit crankpin to slip in the left side wheel. The electronic throttle was introduced in '08 to fix the problem. It won't allow the throttle body to open fully until higher rpm regardless of how far you twist the throttle.
Yeah yeah, I know, this theory is complete B.S. It's modern technology, an upgrade, an improvemnt. But why don't the lighter Dynas, and Softies have the electronic throttle. Is it because they rarely have the 'scissoring problem" with those same "crapola" flywheels?
