Thanks for taking the time to document what was done. Ive got a few questions.
Did you replace both races and the main shaft bearing since you had to cut the inner race out?
What did you have to modify on the 1 7/8 socket?
What tool did you use to get the counter sprocket off? The impact gun or a huge breaker bar?
Did you find out which seal it was that was leaking?
Again, thanks for the writeup.
Carl
Did you replace both races and the main shaft bearing since you had to cut the inner race out?One race gets pressed out with the bearings, the other always stays on the shaft. A gap is supposed to be left by the install on the inside allowing the HD puller tool to work, many have been cut off.
What did you have to modify on the 1 7/8 socket? Take a 1 7/8" and cut it around the circ in the middle, weld a piece of same size dia into the middle making a deep well socket 6" in lenght.
What tool did you use to get the counter sprocket off? The impact gun or a huge breaker bar? Tried the breaker first and then went with the 3/4" impact. Remember this nut gets red locktite, it's really on.
Did you find out which seal it was that was leaking? It was the inner primary mainshaft seal. Do it right and replace all the seals as I mentioned or take the chance something else won't go.
Crap. I took my primary cover off at the 5000 service, since im doing it myself. The inside of cover was gouged, flaking off. You can rub you finger over it and slice your finger. Thats BS. Its only been serviced by dealer at 1000. Not happy here. Im on a rant sorry. Its about seals.
Excellent post and in my case, very timely. My 09 Ultra is going under the knife on Tuesday for a similar procedure. I still won't know what I'm talking about, but thanks to you I will be able to picture what my Indy is telling me.
