Really? Its A motorcycle! Its new , and its a cruiser! What kind of "smoothing" out are you looking for? I can almost guarantee whatever you replace the oem with you wont be able to tell the difference.
Guys Thanks.. I was figuring $500. too $800.. For a good pair.. As far as the ultra being a cruiser, maybe for some who don't like to ride very far. I ride and ride on trips, as far as Alaska, 10.228 miles round trip in a month.. I want a smooth ride where I can rode 500 + miles in a day. The stock shocks do not provide that type of ride quality.
I don't know what you've tried so far , but play with the air pressure until you find a sweet spot.
When my bike was new , I went with 10lbs one up and 20lbs two up for a nice feel.
Now that I have 15,000 miles on it , I run 14 one up and 26 two up for the same feel.
YMMV , but I'm about 152lbs and the wife is about 135lbs , I keep about 40 lbs of tools and clothing at all times.
The Harley shock pump has been a very good investment , and the book ratings seem a little high for me , but your weight and riding style will be the deciding factors.
I also run 40psi front and rear in the tires.

Based on your statement no one would ever replace anything stock. On the contrary, riders quickly replace some or all of the following OEM parts because they are cheap and under perform:
Pipes (for better performance)
Tuner (for better performance)
Air cleaner (for better performance)
Handlebars (for more comfort and better control of the bike)
tires (see above)
cams (ditto)
Seats (adjustable to the rider's dimensions)
etc., etc.
Why not the shocks? Quality shocks can make a huge difference in handling, comfort and safety if correctly matched to the bike, rider and passenger. Even Harley offers premium progressive touring shocks.

Completely misinformed and obviously has never tried upgraded suspensions. It's like day and night difference.
01 FLHT- Race Tech gold valve in front and Ohlins 2-2B going in the rear.
10 FLSTFB- Race Tech gold valve going in front and Shotgun shock already in rear.
I've owned Harleys since before the expression 'cruiser' was invented. They have always been bikes to me, nothing less! Mrs B and I travelled to Hungary and Slovenia in May on my 1990 Glide. It's a touring bike with custom-built Ohlins shocks, which are a great improvement to our comfort and ride quality
