Default Deutsch Connector Tutorial

I had to do some wiring that required that I assemble the male end of a Deutsch Connector. Since I was unfamiliar with this mystical German extreme environment connector, I solicited help from this forum, and a couple of fellow members provided instructions and encouragement. This ended the mystery of how these connectors are assembled and prompted me to post some pictures of my assembly process.

The next post will have the remaining pictures.

What did you use for your crimping tool? That seems to be the key.

Good job.

Now that being said, go get your service manual and it will show you how to deal with the other connectors too!

I used a fine needle nose pliers.

You say'in that stuff is in there?

Seriously, I was wondering what that gray connector that is zip-tied next to the female Deutsch Connector is for? What is that connector called?

An exploded view of both the male and female Deutsch connectors is on page 620 of the 2006 Touring Service Manual (Appendix B-3, Figure B-5).

Groaning, the other connector is the "B+" connector; i.e. it's an fused, direct connection to the battery's positive terminal.

The HD p/n's and names for the various parts for the Deutsch connector shown in the pictures, and the mating female connector are identified in this pdf file:

http://www.harley-davidson.com/en_US...ts/-J01544.pdf

Deutsch makes a variety of different connectors; the one shown in the pictures is their DT series. Our bikes also use Deutsch DTM series. You can see pictures at this vendor's website:

http://www.wirecare.com/deutsch-conn...er=2&Series=DT

Another vendor, and one who will provide assembled connectors, is Batts Racing:

http://www.deutschconnector.com/prod...es_connectors/

I've never used needle nose pliers to crimp sockets or pins; but, I have a Philmore WS26 crimp tool from Fry's that cost $9.99 and it did a good job; and, an open barrel crimp tool from Sargent that cost about $25 that is better due to it's articulated action.

There's a lot of information on the web explaining how to crimp Deutsch and Amp sockets and pins, as well as assembling and disassembling connectors. Here's one of the many:

You should solder the connection after crimping.

I personally solder the wire into the pin. Less chance of it coming loose. Over 100 plugs and never had one come apart.
