Welcome to the forum!
There are so many options and opinions.
If you do a search, you can spend days reading on what pipes, tuners and filters to use.
There really is no one best set up because of how many parts are available and so many opinions.
May want to get with a rally & see what people are running as for exhaust. Once you hear the sound you want, ask what exhaust they have on it & if there are any mods done to it. Higher compression, cams, intake & size of the engine can have a say as to the sound, not to mention if they pulled the baffles & modified them. Good luck
Cams & bearings, Mufflers and/or headers, hi flow air cleaner, and a good tune.
I'm not sure if that bike has the catalytic converter or not. I think it does. If so, cut it out or replace the head pipes. I like:
S&S 510 cams
Torrington bearings
Rinehart True Duals
Arlen Ness Big Sucker
Delphi or Dyno Jet Tune
There are several different companies other than these that will get your numbers up and make that 96 run cooler and and sound better. These are just my prefs and some combos that have been used on mine and many of my friends bikes.
If you don't feel comfortable doing this yourself, find a good mech that can let you talk to some references. The HD store is not always the best place. In fact it has been my experience over the years they can be the worst place depending on the dealer.
This should run you under $2500. A local shop here (not HD) does all of the above (uses stock head piped and cuts out cat) for around $2000. I always put my coin into performance over bling. To each his own.
thanks for all the info. i dont believe my bike has a cat on it. pipes look normal to me. i read alot on here on mufflers, filters and tuners. thinking i will do v&h monster ovals. maybe a screamin eagle air kit then tuner later hows this sound?? looking to change wheels mine has wires on it. she has bought alot of chrome for it already ha ha.
