Default Cams for "my" bagger--Thoughts?

Bike- 2011 Ultra Limited 103 with Ness air box and V&H Pro pipe 2 into 1

Spoke to Indy a couple of times now about build. Here's his suggestions:

S&S 585's with heads cleaned up and valve springs added for the high lift cam. I ride solo 90% of the time @ 240lbs. I have read until I am confused and now look to the experts on the cam choice. He's very high on the S&S easy starts and I am alright with using those but I think the torque may come on too high in the 585 for a big heavy bagger. Anybody running these? Parts will be ordered tomorrow morning, so is this the right choice or should I (OR WOULD YOU) move back down to the 583, 570, or the 551?

Thanks!

If I were you I'd just go with the 551s or Woods 555, the 585 is OK if you're into riding hard & shifting a lot, you're right it's not an optimum bagger cam.

I have the s&s easy starts 551s. They really do take a lot of strain off of the starter when turning the bike over. The cams pulls strong from off of the line all the way up to about 4200 or so. When cruising at 70 in 6th gear, I can roll on the throttle and the bike takes off. I was riding with a friend with a standard build and I used only half the throttle and he was having trouble keeping up. I think this is the best set up for baggers and for people who may get on it but not spend a lot of time above 4500 on the tach. I did a lot of research on the cams and felt that they match exactly how I ride. I have spoken with people that went with the 585s and they have all said they wish they had a bit more low end torque. If you haven't seen it, check out s&s's web site. They have all of their dyno graphs of each cam and the builds they used when testing.

Ive had the 585 in my previous build and have to say that its a good cam if you ride above 3400rpms. I could never cruise in 6th gear without down shifting. It ran really good but short on bottom end in my opinion. Go with the 570 or 551 if you like low end. Low end TQ is great for a bagger. I wouldnt mind trying the 583 but dont have the funds. Ive heard great things about the 570 and the stump pulling 551. If I had to do over I would do the 551. Unfortunately you dont hear a whole lot about s&s cams in this forum as most prefer woods or andrews.

Yes. Or S&S 510's. I hear Andrews makes good cams for baggers and all the websites seem to recommend the best ones for your particular bike.

If S&S is what you want, I'd go with a 510 or 570. I have a 510G in my 02 RKC and love it.

If you want another good torque cam for a 103" look at the SE204.

Good luck

Don't know bout S&S but se255's with a good tune or se254's both good low end tq. and as far as S&S easystart your limited came with acr's.
