I agree with the charge line inside the tank. I had the same thing happen to me when I had my Deuce. Even though the fitting to the tank is stainless, the actual line running in the tank is some sort of plastic. The shop told me that it is a very common issue for those of us lucky enough to pay all that money for fuel and state taxes but still get the pleasure of riding on some of the roughest roads in America (Pennsylvania). The vibration and constant jarring of the line creates a crack where it flexes the most.
Not saying this is what it is, but your symptoms sure sounded like mine and based on vapor coming through your gas fill.
Best of luck bro, I know how frustrating these things can be.
The hole may be small enough not to be easily visible. If you saw the mist, there is definitely something causing a loss of pressure.
Probably should have pressure tested it before pulling everything apart. When it happened to me the shop had a fuel pressure gauge that plugged in to the main feed line coming out of the tank. We turned the ignition on and watched the pressure rise as the fuel pump ran. As soon as the pump turned off pressure fell. Maybe your shop has a way to test the pressure on the bench.
I have everything back in the tank now. The tank is still off the bike, so I can carry just the tank in and have everything pressure tested if they have the equipment. I called the dealer today for some advice and a fuel filter. They were baffled as well and DID NOT have the fuel filter in stock. I ordered the filter kit from J&P for a delivery tomorrow. I can't see not replacing the fuel filter with all this stuff out. I took a look at my spark plugs. They were brand new about two months ago. They are blackened alot right now. The tune I have been running for the EFI has been great. The bike was running smooth as it ever has. I have a new set of plugs and as soon as the filter gets in, I will change them and the filter. I will check into that pressure test now.
Just got off the phone with my HD service manager. He says that it is probably one of the internal fuel lines. He also said that there has been a rash of this lately in our area. This is why they do not have any filters or fuel lines in stock. I am getting ready to take him the tank so they can check the entire system. He also told me that I should NOT be running the SE gold plugs. The parts guy gave me the plugs to try about 2 months ago. Reason given for not using is that they do not work well with EFI systems. I also viewed my custom tune on my PC and found the the engine dispalcement was set wrong at 96.7 ci when the correct setting is 103.1 ci. I may have a combination of things working against me here, but by checking all things up front, I hope to put this s**t to rest so I can ride. Dammmmnit!
Agree with Zed one thing at a time, yep SE Plugs and wires wre not good for these bikes, but not the cause of your problem. Once you get it running again use seafoam every now and then to clean the varnish from your fuel system.
Problem solved. Got bike back running again. Carried the tank with to my dealer. Discussed the problem with the service tech and explained the situation. He told me that some misting in the tank is typical because of the excess that is dumped back into the tank from the low pressure side. I brought everything back home and hooked the tank back up leaving the fuel filter assembly and low/high pressure hoses slightly exposed for good viewing. I then charged the line and found no problems with the fuel lines. OK, now the next step. I edited the tune on my Power Vision software for a 103.1 ci displacement, saved the file to the Power Vision, and then flashed the ECM. I also changed the spark plugs from the SE plugs to platinum. Bike started right up and ran terrific. Took it for a spin and the performance is much better. The bike even sounds different with a deeper more loping sound (sounds better). No sputtering at all. I am going to play with another tune later and try to lean it up a little more. I know that rich is better than to lean, but I want to try and get it perfect. That Power Vision makes it easy. To sum it up, I went through a lot of trouble when it could have been a lot easier. One good thing from this is that I learned. Always good to learn. Thank you all for your help. I will remember the advice given and use it in the future. I hope I can return the favor one day soon.
Hmmm. That's a new one to me. Glad to hear it's back up and running. Sorry about leading you on a wild goose chase.
One question though: How did the displacement on the PC get changed?
Zach
I bought the Power Vision and the dealer put a custom tune on it specifically for my bike. For some reason (human error I am sure), the displacement was set at 96.7 ci. I made the change to the tune on my laptop PC and then loaded the revised tune on my Power Vision unit.
You didn't lead me on a wild goose chase. Even the dealer told me that the fuel line was my problem over the phone. Like I said, I learned a lot of things today and that is better than not having learned anything. I am better for it. Thanks again Zach.
