So, What have you been doing this Summer??
Iam a retired Fire Fighter and EMT - in all my 35 years I have Never even heard of someone with a broken Heel (Calcaneus) - Well, On Aug,9 I started my class on what all this means. I was asked by a very good friend that has Cancer for help putting up outdoor speakers. I jumbed at the chance to pay back this friend. I work all day and on the last speaker, I violated the first saftey when working of a ladder - I did not have someone foot the ladder. I propped the ladder againest the wall and just needed to go up about 5 feet to put up the speaker - well, the ladder slipped straight down and my right heel came down on one of the rungs. OUCH...
I knew something was broken - I thought it was the ankle... went to Dr, took Xray - walked right across the lot to the Ortho - who looked at the Xray - put on a cast and sent me to get a CT scan - next day, the Ortho said he wanted me to be seen by a Ortho who was a specialist in feet / Ankles. Found Dr. Mann in Oakland, Ca - world class DR..
Turned out my break was not as bad as it could be - still got surgery and got two screws and a plate - So, this Aug and Sept have been spent with a cast - got it off Last Friday and have been on the computer a LOT since Aug 9 learning about ankles and heels... WOW, I never knew how bad an injury this could be.
All is going as its supposed to do, No weight on the foot unitl about Oct 7 then on Oct 21 PT starts - then I get to learn how to walk again, lol
DR says I should get out of all this with no real long term issues.... and back to riding around Christmas.
Man take care of your feet guys and gals - wear proper boots.
I have found two very good forums - Like our HDforusm - except the deal with broken Ankles and Heels - I have learned a lot - just like I have learned about my HD here.
Just thought I would post to all of you.... watch those feet...
So, Why am I posting here?? I have been on this forum for severl years and have learned a lot... If I can help just one person to avoid either a broken ankle or heel, then all is not lost...
While I was at the dr on friday - I have a HD shirt on - guy came in with a cast like mine... I ask ankle or heel?? said Nope - I see you ride?? Yes, He said Well, dont park were a curb is next to your floor board??? he went on to say, he and a buddy found a place to park where it put his EG next to a curb that stuck out from the side walk, tight but the curb was on the right and the kick stand was leaning the bike to the left... However, when he was ready to leave - he got on the bike stood it up had his right foot on the ground, bike went to far right and his foot got caught between the floor board and the curb - could not get his foot up and the bike continued over on the right side, crushing his foot... he yelled and friends went to stand the bike up but dropped it again on his foot... OUCH...
no heel or ankle but crushed foot and toes... No riding till early 2012
take care all

How many times have I said, I am just going to the store - I don't need a jacket or gloves and I will just use my bennie helmet...
Well, no more... If I cut another corner where saftey is concerened and it bites me in the ***, My wife will Not be so understanding..
**** happens and thats fine... but when "I" contributed to the injuries becuse I didn't follow saftey - then thats on me.
This will Not stop me from riding and enjoying life - Just be a little more carfull
