Default "Stealer" does it again

My front tire (which was new this spring) went flat. I checked at the dealer and they wanted $182 for the tire which does not include mounting. Online I can get it delivered for $110. Amazing >50% price gouge. and better yet they will not mount it if I do not buy from them. What a racket.

How dare they try and make money. There are probably several other dealers and places on-line that want more that $182 for the same tire.

Seriously, what caused the tire to go flat? Are you going to mount it yourself? What do they charge for mounting the tire?

I am all for shopping for the best price and DIY but why complain when a business is up front about what they charge?

Don't forget to check the date code on that cheap tire! Some online retailers have good deals on "old" tires -yes they do go "out of date"!

So for $72.00 you are going to remove the tire and wheel from the bike, mount the new tire, balance the tire, remount the tire and wheel. Do you have all the equipment to do this? Or do you have an indy who will do the job cheaper? How did this all work out for you?

I totally agree, dealerships start for the same reason as every other business, to make money. Is it responsible to put your "best" price out there though? Of course it is.

OP, if I was you, I would let the dealer know that you have been shopping around and got several better prices. I would explain that you prefer to have the product purchased and the work done through their shop, but ask for a discount on the price of the tire or the labor. They probably will not knock off as much as you could save online, but they should do something for you. My dealer never said anything at all about dropping prices, but it was only because I never asked. I said screw that, asked, and now get 15% off everything I buy from there. And remember, free shipping.

No dealer will ever offer you money off, you have to go get it.

Good luck!

As a store manager of a car parts store, I am here to make money for my company.

If a customer walks in, and wants a brake job, and I price him at 129 and he buys it and walks out the door, I make money, the company makes money.

If that same customer comes in and asks me is that the best you can do? I tell em nope, and knock maybe $20 off the price. I still make money, company still makes money, and customer thinks they got a great deal. But I am never going to offer a discount.

I guess I'm lucky. My dealer will mount a tire for me I bring in. Try another dealer.

Friend with a 2009 ultra was told he needed a new rear tire. When asked, the dealer told him they would replace it for $500!!!! Having been through that meat grinder before, I purchased my tires (yes, front AND rear) from Cycle Gear. Yes, I had to removed the wheels and haul them to Cycle Gear to have mounted and balanced; but not a problem. Total cost was $275.
