I think lot more young folks on baggers now. Maybe for the music. Most of the bike at the bar have a fairing, most electra glides. Used prices dropping might have also helped. Around here, if you want to ride more, you want a fairing. Though I know some hold outs.
I can only think he meant that Texas roads are long, straight, and wide. His statement included he believed narrow roads may be inconvenient.

As far as younger guys on baggers, also true. A lot of that has to do with a lot of the performance parts available for them. For me, I didn't have to choose big slow geezer glide with the parts I have have in the bike, I have a sport bike I can ride cross country and enjoy everywhere. 10 years ago, or in the case of this thread, 19 years ago, that wasn't really an option. The race tech has trickled down and the King of the Bagger races has really opened up the flood of tech coming to the bigger bikes.

For me, being in my 30's when I got my first bagger, it was a no brainer. Buy it and build it to do everything. Couldn't be more happy.

I dunno if it is a speed thing. I think music, and comfort. Plus maybe the used market prices dropped. In this part of the country you have cold nights and mornings, around here I would say 3/4s or so of harleys have fairings

Myself, I wanted more storage, cause it means more time on a bike, more protection, cause it means more time on a bike.

I don't know what it is like in hot parts of the country.

Music is in my helmet. Cardo. Comfort, in my 30's, nothing hurt so it wasn't a consideration. They're still more expensive than Softails and Dynas. Those reason I shared were the reasons I bought one and the guys my age bought them. The reasons you give here are much more practical reasons, but not something I considered in my 30's.

I love riding my Electra glide with my wife. Modified rear and front suspension, upgraded motor, etc. Rides fantastic, power is 120/114. More than enough to keep up with traffic and most others. I’m not in it for the speed, just cruising. However, there’s enough power to get you out of trouble quick.
Gray beard and silver hair, I guess I qualify.

I must be going backwards. Bought My first ultra classic 2003, at 42 years old. Bought my first Softail lowrider St at 62. Never rode the ultra again. Brakes suck, clutch sucks, can't get out of its own way, suspension sucks, weight a half ton. Gas mileage not that great.
Pros it has a ton of storage your never cold or wet. I realize they have updated them quite a bit. But the lowrider St very comfortable, handles great, excellent fuel mileage. Fast as hell. 500 mi days no problem. Cons not a lot of storage. Wind protection Fair. Not many audio options. I'm 63 now with just a little touch of Gray.

You gotta get in the grey beard ultra club slowly… start off with a no grey beard and you stay on the heritage, dynas, etc. start getting a touch of grey and you can graduate to the street glide. Get the full Monty and you’re now eligible for the Electra couch with full luggage capabilities. Grow out that grey past 6 inches and you can graduate to the road couch or CVO couch!

60 with a grey beard here.
I love my country & classic rock music, with bands like Pink Floyd or AC/DC I play it loud.
No-one will ever hear me playing the techno rap crap **** or whatever the kiddies are listening to these days.

54 and grey for the last 10+years. Got my "GeezerGlide" 2 years ago. I was always on a sportbike until the carpal tunning in my wrists made it inpossible to ride longer than 15 min any more. Once I rode one and found cruise control and a radio, I was hooked
