I did a SS1000 on my Road Glide Ultra in June, no problem. I'd disagree with the statement you heard about Harley ergonomics. To me, long distance riding is more about the rider than the ride.

I did cocoa beach florida to richmond virginia approx 780miles. It was done stopping only for gas on a 06 superglide with stiff lowering springs, drag bars, badlander seat and no windshield. It took me about 12hrs. When i finally got home i didnt touch the bike for a week. I couldve used a chiropractor too

Easy to do, especially on ultra. I've done different IBA rides on a fatboy with no shield, a sportster and this summer an ultra. A friend does all his on a 1974 flh. Only the rider makes or limits the possibilities.

ks6c, OK! Now I have an additional reason for the ride. I am planning the ride for the longest day so you'll have a wait but I will post you a picture when I have fulfilled the promise.

Regards

That's complete bullshit. Goto the IBA site and look at the list of riders who have completed it, and while it's not the most popular Ironbutt bike on the list, there are PLENTY of them listed, including my ride. The key to any long distance touring machine is you have to make it fit the rider. Every motorcycle brand I have owned for the past 10-15 years I have had to make my own to suit MY needs. And the web has plenty of sites dedicated to each make/model of motorcycle providing information on just how to do that to about every bike out there.

We had a guy last summer on ours who rode on his '84 Tour Glide. It was a great experience, although I have to give you props for making the trip on a fatboy with no shield.

FD2, let me give you another option for the summer solstice - the Royal British Legion Riders 1K:

Great cause and put on in partnership with the IBA UK crew, and you'd meet several hundred other like-minded riders.

Cheers

Makes a lot of sense Dan, and has resonance as I was in the RBL as was my Mum and Dad and I have been involved in some fund raising stuff for them recently. The down side (apart from not trying the bars you id'd) is the roads over here - which are both congested and, on the northern route at least, the one I would probably follow, two lane and twisty.

Ok, I am going to get into the research. Thanks for the suggestion.

Pete

I have done three one day rides of 860+ miles and one of just under 1K in the past three years. These were on an Ultra. The three were all around 13 hours. The 1K was 22.5 hours going up and across Canada where you can't make time like you can on the Interstates in the US. When on the two to three tours I do each year the average day is at 600 miles.

My son did an official 1K Iron Butt last year on a Street Bob. I have never heard that a Touring Harley was not good for touring. I Have been from Alaska to Key West From East to West on a HD without any riding comfort Issue. He accompanied me on His Street Bob and accumulated 38K touring.

But then I'm only 71 so I can't speak for those with less capabilities.
