Get the King! I can make any bike fit me and suit my tastes, I'm sure he will figure it out, that's the fun part. The Deluxe is a great ride, but is a down grade compared to the King for cross country rides.
My friends wife wants to surprise her husband with a Harley for Christmas. The problem is she only has about a 12k budget. I was just at the dealer and saw a 2004 Road King Custom right in that ball park. Very nicely taken care of - prior owner did great keeping the bike up. My buddy was interested in a Heritage a while back. Since we ride as a group a lot we'd probably do some rides that are 300+ miles. Do you guys think the RK Custom would be better or a Heritage? The Custom in my opinion is probably a better bike but wanted to get other thoughts here...
Is that 04 road king black and covered in skulls by chance?
Road Kings are nice, had one myself. However, if I was his wife, I would give him the money in a helmet, and let him decide on what model. He may want an Ultra. A lot of them out there in that price range. So I say, as others have, let him choose. That way, it's all good.
Buy him a nice helmet, wrap it up with a HD key chain and a plastic toy key with "your Harley awaits you" written on it.
Let him pick out his bike... the surprise is just as good. Hate to see him get a bike he does not fall in love with.
This is the way to go. He can take his time to really figure out what he wants. Just because it is a Christmas gift, doesn't mean it has to be bought before Christmas.
We ride with a couple that have a Heritage - they don't have any trouble keeping up with any of us and love their bike. I don't think they would trade it for anything.
