Boom Audio dented Fender
I had the same issue on my 2013 Road King. One major difference: the HD dealership installed mine. After a couple of weeks, I went out and found a similar dent. I couldn't figure out how it got there, and had not known it when it happened. I honestly had not even paid attention to where the mounted amp was. I finally figure out what caused the dent, but still wasn't aware that the offending object was the added on amp for the boom audio.
I took the bike to the shop to inquire how such a dent could occur and we (me and one of the service desk kids) figured out it was the amp. (that was a funny conversation...I said, "look at this dent...how does that happen?" He says, while pointing at the amp: "what's that?" I say: "hell, if you don't know, how the hell do I?") That's when I thought and said "it must be part of the sound system." He got the service manager.
The service manager said "Well that's where HD tells us to mount it." To which I replied: "Which is why they should fix it". He said: "We'll fix it this time, but you're on notice of the risk now if you want to keep the system on there." Well, I wasn't sure that maybe I hadn't done something wrong, and was simply glad they fixed (straighten an repaint the fender) it, plus didn't want to trash the $300+ system plus the labor I'd paid for to mount it. And they did a fine job on the repair and paint. However, I asked if there was no other place to mount it. I was told no...it has to get air flow, and/or be away from engine heat. Two and a half weeks in the body shop later, I had my bike back. I'm riding last Saturday, and hit a bump...a small pothole. One you might try to avoid if you could but not unusual. I was not going fast (maybe 40mph) I heard it this time. I just knew it was dented again. And it was as I discovered at the next stop light. I now was aware that I could not ride my bike under normal riding conditions and not dent the fender as long as this sound system were mounted this way. Something had to be wrong. I went immediately to the shop, and talked to another service desk kid. He agreed something wasn't right. Also told me it upset him when the service manager told me the first time that the next dent fix would be on me without even trying to resolve the issue in the first place. Good kid! The service manager was on vacation and due back Monday.
In the mean time, I googled up "Boom Audio dented fender" when I got home and voila, this thread popped up. I looked at the instructions posted in this thread, and armed with this went to the shop to put the service manager on notice that they had mounted the amp in the wrong location and used the wrong mounting bracket. I was nice and polite, and he was apologetic. I delivered it to the shop yesterday, and it's being straightened and painted...again. The amp is being re-mounted on the lower brace where it goes on the RK, and for my trouble, I'm getting my 10K mi service on the house. I hate that they messed it up to begin with, and hate I now have a "repaired/painted bike" with whatever diminished value that may cause, but I didn't buy it for trade value either. They've made it right in my book. Say what you want about HD, or their dealers, but to date I have to give Heart of Dixie Harley Davidson in Pelham, AL credit where it's due. They've done ok by me so far, even when they've screwed up.
