Default Need help with v&h true duals

Just to give you a bit of a backround I have a 09 street glide first bike I ever had. I bough v&h true duals and have been going through the install and I am stuck and hoping someone can help me out. So I have removed all the old and I am getting ready to bolt the new headers to the cylinder head. However first flag was when it said about removing the old gasket. Now I am no mechanic however I check on the header pipe and in the cylinder head were the pipe rest and I didn't see any gasket. I scrapped with my nail around were the pipe would be and it is all metal. So then I go to put the new gasket on this gasket is clearly to big to fit in the hole were the pipe goes and after looking on the form people have said that is normal. However I am not able to get enough threading were the flange is to get the bolt on. Am I doing this wrong or maybe putting this gasket in the wrong place. If someone could please help me out with this that would be great.

Ben...couple things to think about:

1. The exhaust "gaskets" are actually pressed metal fibers. When you take off the stock exhaust, the gaskets usually are so covered in black exhaust "soot" that you can't see them. Take a pair of needle nose pliers and press them agains the very edge of the hole. If the gasket is in there (which it should be) the end of the hole will bend and you'll be able to grab the gasket with the pliers and pop out the used gasket. Here's a pic of what the gasket looks like in the jug before it gets black with exhaust "soot". Take your pliers and press in against the very edge and it will bend making it easier to grab and pop out.....

2. When installing the new gasket, yes, it will be fairly tight but it will seat in the hole far enough that it will be flush with the jug outer wall. Make sure you install the gasket with the tapered end towards the outside of the jug.

3. Once the above steps are completed, install the new header. It will be tight and you might only have one or two exposed threads on the mounting posts after it passes through the flange, but once you get the nuts started, they will pull the flange, thus pulling the pipe, into the soft metal gasket.

Hope this helps...and makes sense

Well put fenderzig. I found it easy to use a right angled scribe to hook on to the old gasket to get it out. Just another option.

Lots of great input & Fender's detailed reply is spot-on. Pics are a God-send w/this type of issue & those metal/crush exhaust gaskets are a bugger. Remember to follow proper torque-specs on install & re-torque after the 50-mile test run (cool bike/exhaust). Let us know how it goes & show-off the new exhaust w/some pics...!!

good lord, don't get the SE gaskets...they are tiny and you'll get leaks. So, yes, there are two types of gaskets you can use. The only benefit to using the SE tiny ones is that the chance of a part of the gasket interfering with exhaust flow when crushed.

Don't use the little ones. Use the angled ones.

I took a small pick to get the gasket out, it takes some feeling to get under it but it will just lift up when you do.

Also, when you put it back in,it is slightly larger than the hole so you'll have to really make sure you center is squarely and then push it in with your fingers. The trick is to get it in there without messing it up. Once it comes "apart" it's a gamble. Put it in there and tuck it in like you would a bearing.

When I installed mine, I found another link on this forum that recommended placing your new gaskets in the freezer for a few hours. This will cause the gasket to contract a little. Then use a little soap or anti-sieze on the gasket and it will go in easier. Worked for me. Just my .02.

I'm w/shore on the SE gaskets...flimsy & not alot of metal there for good seal. Standard HD gaskets are a bugger, but better...in the long run...
