I got a HD backrest on my RK, new- have not been able to ride with it, but think it will help my back.
On a different note- started drinking Aloe Vera juice to see if it calms the aches and pains
what the heck eh?
Uhhhhh drinking Aloe Vera??? Hmmm tell me how that works out. Never heard of drinking it. Put it on my skin when I have a bad sunburn, but never drank it.
'06 FLHTC. Installed H-D backrest and found it pushed me forward enough to make my legs cramp up. I ended up having an auto upholsterer reduce the thickness of the padding which made it much more comfortable.
A riders backrest is a god send for those of us with back issues. If you want to do it right get an aftermarket seat. All I have to do is insert the backrest into the slot whenever I want it and pull it up and out whenever I don't. There is no installation, no bolts, no bullchit. I have a Saddlemens Explorer Seat for 2 up and a Mustang Seat for solo. Wunderbar!
1st off, you will notice all the people who say it pushes them to far forward are riding a 2008 or older bike. They changed the design of the backrest in 2009. I've had both and the earlier ones did do that.
Now, I have a degenerative back issue and I can't ride over 20 mintues without a backrest without my back really starting to hurt. I can ride all day with the backrest, that's how much of a difference there is.
The instuctions are almost worthless, but if I can do it, it ain't that hard.
I went with the smooth design because I am always changing seats.

Well, I'm very fortunate to be healthy with no back problems at all. So, I went with a backrest just because it's more comfortable. You gotta give it a try.
