The heat that would build up in the shock pump (or even one of those bicycle frame pumps) would melt the guts and ruin the pump after less than a minute (ask me how I know... Although I warned him - I did - And then we had a nice ride to the dealer to get him a new pump for his shocks).
If you were out in the middle of nowhere and had an hour to kill, you could probably do it. But I wouldn't count on it for anything other than incredibly low-volume stuff.
+1 on the Slime pump -- Used one with the battery-connected HD outlet in my TourPak (although I did step up the fuse to accomodate that pump specifically). Slow - But works well.

I have been using a cheap air pump that I bought for like $15 at kmart and pulled the outside case off and just carry the actual little compressor. I run it off my battery tender plug and it has never blown a fuse and is about the size of your fist. I keep it wrapped in a sock in the saddlebag along with my Stop n Go patch kit.

Same here....Nice set-up and piece of mind on the road.Got my pump at Walmart!!
I won a small 12-volt compressor in a contest. It's a Kobalt brand, so I think it's Lowe's or Home Depot. Works well away from home. Best bet is just invest in a compressor for the garage - it will pay for itself by extending tire life (assuming you check pressure often).
I use the co2 set up...dosent take up much space..hope I never have to use it.. mine didnt come with plugs.. just the inflater hose & co2 containers http://www.jpcycles.com/product/217-321
Used the plug for the first time last year on a friend's bike with a flat on the side of the road. Took a minute (okay, several minutes to wrap my head around the technique, but that thing is truly amazing.
