Default 96 vs 103

I know this topic has been talked about in the past but I would like some fresh replies.
I've noticed a lot of heat from my 96" & I would imagine that the 103 would put out as much, if not more. Is the power that much more noticeable? Or would a tuned 96 compare with the 103?

Depends what year your 96" is... mine is an 07 (read as catless) and I don't really ever notice any heat issues. Don't get me wrong the thing is hot sitting in traffic on a 90* day sitting in traffic, but for the most part the engine runs cool, if not cooler than my evo does. In fact riding my brothers evo powered ultra i notice the heat way more, i think it has something to do with the bat wing. Frankly, I think the bulk of these heat complaints are guys riding with batwings or shark noses that block air from these AIR cooled engines. Just my $0.02. As far as comparable to a 103 I can't comment but if I had to venture a guess, cats + stricter EPA regs (running lean) make for a hot engine, open up those pipes and throw on an air cleaner and a tune and I think anything would run cool.

I dont know what anybody else will say, but I think the 96 is hotter than the 103. I never notice has much heat coming from the streetglide has i do with the deluxe with 96. I only test drove a stock 103 and it has more power, but I did a download on my SG and my Deluxe is stock and there is no comparison in power.

How would a fairing that is mounted higher than the engine effect cooling?

To answer the OPs question, the 103 suffers from the same EPA friendly tuning that the 96 does. For either engine a Stage 1 cures it.

Is your 96" stock? If so they are on the lean side of things for EPA, thus the heat.
I would think in stock tune and form a 96" vs 103" in say a Roadking 2011 year, that the 103 would pull it in the 1/4 mile.

I am not a mechanic or tuner
If it were me, going from stock, I would go with TW-555 or TW-777 cams
High flow A/C and decent exhaust head pipe back, and probably PV from Fuelmoto.

The 103 offers a wee bit more torque than the 96, it's a slightly larger displacement. I had my 103 dyno tuned after the 1K service, and it ran cooler, because the AFR was dialed in across the RPM range; a good tune helps.

An oil cooler is helpful too. My 2 cents.

Cheers,

Mark

+1.....a proper Stage 1 gets rid of the Cat and adds a proper tune. Problem solved. I rode my Stage 1 (103) all last summer in 90 deg temps and never felt any noticeable heat unless stuck in heavy city traffic at a stop light for a short time. And don't forget the new 103's have oil coolers.

Do a stage 1 with cams, get a pipe to ditch the cat, get a good tuner.

I don't have a proper answer for that, You would really need to get the bike in a wind tunnel for a definitive answer. My comment is based off experience that my bro's evo with the batwing feels hotter against my legs than my 07 RK going down the road at 55. My best guess in the stock deflectors on a 98 ultra classic cause some wind to be pushed away from the engine, or at least more air than a road king would have pushed away from the engine. I know I'm somewhat comparing apples to oranges here but it's what I've noticed switching between the two.

Stage one on my 96" cooled it down and True Duals cooled it down even more. Soon to be upgraded to a 103 with a TTS tune and cam change. Hoping I wont need an oil cooler like the stock 103 EPA set-up.

I think bigger would be better for power, as to the engine heat EPA=HOT. Engines are
just air pumps, 103 is a bigger air pump then a 96, more air more power. Just two
penneys.
