Default Blacking out (plastic) tail light trim

For those of you that have blacked out the plastic/chrome trim around the brake/taillight (09FLHX).....I'm going to paint this and just looking for some advice. What steps do i need to do to prep this piece to accept the paint over that "chrome" layer?

I've got all my other powdercoating back and need to finish this piece.

I posted in the paint/powdercoat section, but I'm lucky if 2 people saw it.

Thanks for any input.

Im going to do the same thing with mine. Im going to scuff it up some and hit it with primer and I have a can of HD satin black. From what I have seen some do and seems to hold up very well is do it at a warm day and use a hair dryer after you spray and between coats.

I gave mine a light sandpaper scuff and used the Krylon gloss black spray for plastics.
gave it 2 light coats and matches perfectly...
You can pick up in any hardware store...

I did this to a few parts I didn't send to the pwdercoater. I used a scotchbrite pad as it seemed to scuff more evenly than sandpaper. Make sure you lose ALL the shiny chrome. Clean it really well to remove any residue left, I use isopropyl alcohol. Then a nice coat of good primer. Etching primer works best. For paint, I used an HVLP gun with Sikkens auto paint but any higher quality spray cans will do also. Just don't get the $1.99 cans, it makes a difference. Do as many coats as you feel needed to coat but be sure it's good and dry between. One thing to be sure of also is to keep it in a dust-free environment while drying. You'd be surprised how much dust in the air will land on what you THOUGHT was a nice paint job. Good luck
