Go Pro, mount it to the crash bar if you like, plenty of accessories availible, rugged, and they do stand by their warranty. 95% of the video you see on You Tube is from Go Pro cameras.
Got a 3,700 mile trip planned this summer and I thought it would be neat to film portions of the trip as I ride along. I know some mount them on their helmets, other on the bike itself. Since I have a Street Glide, thought there may be to much vibration to mount it directly on the bike. What are your suggestions? I would also appreciate any camera suggestions as well...I'm not familiar with what is available now. Don't want to invest a lot into the setup as well..hopefully. Thanks!
I have a GoPro Hero2 for the bike with an optional handlebar mount, an older Canon G10 point & shoot for the vest, and a full frame Nikon D3 for the more serios stuff. Personally, I would suggest checking into the GoPro Hero2 and a smaller point and shoot as well. Some of the newer P&S take pretty good photos and have video. Canon and Nikon are both pretty good. Price range varies a lot depending on features, i.e. shutter lag, amount of noise, low level lighting capabilitiess, speed, etc. Ram also makes mounts if you just want to mount a P&S. Good luck, now I'm off to a photographer's convention where I plan to check out the new Nikon D4. Big dollars. Too bad I can't just buy it for the hell of it.
I second the GoPro Hero2 camera.
It's small, comes with water proof case, and takes interval shot. ( a picture every 5,30,60 seconds user selectable ) I have several mount location and change it up from time to time. I mostly like the interval shooting set at one every 30 seconds. Set it and ride and when you get home check out what you got .. keep the goods ones and delete all the others..
I have and like the Go Pro HD. I have mine mounted on the handle bar of a 07 Ultra. Nice clear video.
I also have the Go Pro HD with it mounted on the bars with a RAM mount and I also get very good results. It's a little shaky at idle but as soon as you give it some throttle it smooths right out.
another gopro hero 2. I have a variety of mounts from helmet to ram 1" ball mounts on the triple tree. Like others have stated the vibration is only at idle and I like it in a way. I also like the hero's ability to change the field of view from the widest at 170 degree to a narrower one.
I use the lcd back and at times the extended battery pack. The smartphone app for the Contour would be nice as the GPS overlay especially on a bike... Can't have it all I guess. Not sure about the Contours form factor and lack of LCD screen ability.
I would recommend the Go Pro also if using for action. Very compact and can be mounted almost anywhere. If it tells you something, I know a lot of people who use it for skydiving.

I don't know about a camera for your bike, I never had one. I've had several point and shoot cameras, I'm a couple years out dated here, but I know most are really not very good but they will take decent pictures outside in the sunlight. When it gets dark or indoors is when they go to crap. You need a higher ISO setting for the dark and all the cameras go above 800 but almost all of them are only good to 200 or maybe 400 at best. That would be indoor shooting in the day time. The Fuji F30 is by far the best camera for dark situations. If you will be taking pictures at night or in a restaurant or night club I would get a Fuji F30. The F30 has been replaced with the F40, the F40 is fine and better than the others out there, but not as good as the F30.

The iPhone / smartphone app for the Contour is no big deal at all at the moment, in fact it is really disappointing.
Also...the Bluetooth is not compatible with iPhone so if you are using one then you need to shell out for a special chip!
They are promising a new app in March which will hopefully be a big inprovement
