I am 6' and I went with 13s, the hands above the fairing is not as big of an issue as you might think.t he fairing deflects the air up and over your hands for the most part. The 13s are perfect but if I went 14 I think I would be happy as well. I would not want them any lower though.
I'm trying to make the same choice, likely going 12 but I notice one thing.
Most of the guys saying hands over the fairing is no big deal are from Texas, Florida, Arizona etc. Places where 45 degrees is considered cold. Here in Canada it is kind of nice to have your hands protected.
I'll ride into the 20s-30s if there is no ice. Granted we don't get many of those days but I ride to work everyday regardles of temp. Your hands will catch more air with the taller bars. My hands still got cold behind the fairing with stock bars but they get colder with the taller bars. I ride with gerbings heated gloves below 45 now and my hands are never cold. It was in the teens in the morning on a trip out to big bend and I was fine with the heated gear.
Dropped my bike off at my local Indy shop to put my bars on. Going on a cruise late this week so I will pick it up next Monday and take lots of photos. Pretty excited about this mod. Next round of mods will be in June.
I am 6' I got the LA Choppers Prime Apes which are 13's. I have then pushed up as far as they would go and I am at a touch below shoulder height. I could easily have gone 16's.
I parked next to bike your color yesterday that had 12s. It looked sharp!
Figures there is another one my color running around the area with 12's. So far I have not seen a SG my color yet but now I will once I get these on. haha.
Gotta do a couple more things to make it different. My CFR slip-ons are getting a lot of questions. Need to find a unique air cleaner.
Indy shop told me about a custom painter that can paint my inner faring two tone to match my paint.
Another vote for going higher. I'm installing 13" Cyclesmith's on SG, they look good and much improve the riding position and handling IMO and I'm 5' 9".
