Default SE255 Cam Install....Almost a Bad Experience

Got my 255 cams and Heartland cam bearing tool last week, ordered the install kit and map from Fuel Moto and started the install Thursday night.

Came home from work Friday ready to finish up the install. Could'nt wait to see the results of my labors. the install went smoothly except for having to get a .010 thinner cam gear spacer.

Started the bike and had a hellacious popping in the right pipe (true duals). Immediatly thought OH CRAP. My 20 yr old son was here for the startup and he was having a little fun at my expense. I told him he was cut out of the will. LOL.

As careful as I was, how the heck did I get the cams out of time?

After switching the bike off and calming down a few minutes I thought maybe I got a bad plug. Pulled the plugs and could not see nothing wrong with them. Maybe some anti-seize got on the plug. I took some carb cleaner and went to cleaning the plugs.

Just by chance I was looking at the tip as I turned the plug over and the freaking insulator slid down to the tip of the plug. The plugs were removed and re-torqued to 15 ft lbs on install. They WERE NOT dropped at any time. It apparently was weak and just removing and installing it broke the insulator.

I was showing it to the service manager at my dealer and he said he had saw this happen once before. He said it drove them nuts for a while before they found it. I have a automotive background and I have never had this happen to a plug.

Installed two new plugs.

Now for the test ride.

WOW!!!!

I had the Fuel Moto Stage 1 on the bike already, but now with the 255's and Fuel Moto's 255 map its a different bike. This thing has some torque, runs through the gears with ease, very spirited.

I did'nt hit the rev limiter, but I wound her up pretty tight. I can say I did'nt feel any power fall off as some say happens with these cams. It pulls very hard even at higher rpm's.

As a plus, almost all the valvetrain noise is gone. There is very very little noise from the valetrain at any speed. Much quieter than stock.

I am very very satisfied with the results of the 255's. Especially being I only have about $275.00 invested in the upgrade.

I attached a couple pics of the plug so you guys will know what to look for if this happens to you.

Ride Safe!!

35 yrs. as a automotive wrench and I'd have to agree - never seen this before. Guess it's just another example of seeing everything once if ya live long enough...

Congrats on finding it! I put the same cams in with the same results - love 'em.

Been an Automotive tech for 28yrs ASE Master Tech, I've seen this happen mainly on the 3 Valve Ford 5.4L Triton engines, it will drive you nuts trying to find it, and if you've never changed the plugs on one of those beasts, they are a 2 piece plug and they will break in the head and you have to use an extractor to get them out PIA!!....Glad you found it with relative ease, now enjoy those cams!!

Would you be interested in selling or renting the cam bearing tool?

I did the same. I was going to do the install myself just to have the experience and satisfaction of doing the job myself, but when my Indy quoted me 4 hours labor @$55.00 per hour I let him do it. I would have had to buy the cam bearing tool, ect ect.

I too love my 255 cams. kudo's to the OP for doing the job and finding his problem. I also have never seen a plug like that.

JC,

I supposedly have the tool sold to a local guy that is an aquaintance of one of my friends.

I had intended to keep the tool, but he said he would just pay me back what I paid for it instead of him ordering one.

Sounded good to me, I get my $104.00 back. LOL

If for some reason the deal falls through I will PM you.

Anybody thats on the fence about installing the 255's needs to go ahead and do it. I know its been said before but I have to agree. Great upgrade for little $$$$.

I rode the bike again yesterday and I can't stay out of the throttle. Makes the bike even more fun than it was already.

So much for gas mileage. It's getting to be a reflex to twist my right wrist.

I have had a lot of fun with the spark plug. Have been asking people if they can see anything wrong with it.

NOBODY, has yet to find the loose insulator when they look at it.

Ride Safe.
