Default Well crap....

Hi all. I'm just ranting here. I spent alot of time this week working on my bike, just to get slapped in the face on Friday. Put a stage 1 a/c kit, fuel pak, klock works inverted 4" shorties, halogen headlight bulb, new shifter rod ends, fulsac dual conversion and a thourough cleaning. I am working 12hr nights, so I am doing this stuff slowly as time permits. I finished all the work on Friday morning after i got off and couldn't wait to go ride. I've got an 06 vivid black Streetglide that I've owned for a short time and enjoy it like nothing else.

I finished the install and it wouldn't start. Popped thru the intake upon firing and would not run. A quick call to V&H tech line and problem solved. The tech had me make some changes to the map I chose and it started right up. A quick blast around the block brought a few spits and sputters but soon cleared out.

Got back and decided to run a few errands on the bike. I put about 7 miles on it and realized the Check engine light and the battery light was on. Voltage dropping rapidly. Got about 5 miles farther and it quit completely. I checked all my connections and will start troubleshooting this morning per cycle electrics website. Very useful info there. I have already decided that if I have to go into the primary, I will go three phase conversion on the whole system with a new battery.

Just pissed me off that I couldn't enjoy all my hard work before it broke down. RANT OFF!!!!

I'll let you guys know whats going on when I figure it out but if you have any advice, let me know what it is. I haven't been here very long but I've been doing a lot of reading.

Talk to you guys later today hopefully.

You'll prolly say , "oy yeah" silly me, I need to reconnect that wire.

Never a good idea to run "errands" on a bike. Things happen.

I went with the Cycle Electric Phase Three upgrade when i installed the Truck-Lite L.E.D. lights on the front of mine. Indy convinced me it was the way to go.

Default Well....

Last night before locking up the shop, I put the battery charger on it for 2 hrs and then left a battery tender on it over night. This morning, started it up and it charged like nothing ever happened. 12.3vdc at rest and 14.2vdc. Then I turned it off and rechecked, 12.3 at rest and when I turned on the key, BAM 11.1! I then checked as I started it, 7.4 turning over.

I went and bought the best battery I could find in town and put it in. It starts completely different. Since I've had it, it's never turned over like this. I can say that the battery that was in it was a Harley battery, just not sure of the age.

I am gearing up to go ride right now and I will closely monitor the volt gauge and try not to get too far from the house. I feel like something is still not right but I might be paranoid. We'll see.

Could easily have been the battery. Once they get old they can't seem to get a full deep charge, and will discharge quickly with the charging system unable to keep it going.
Good luck.
BTW if you have no idea how the battery was maintained, you got lucky finding out with a short jaunt.
Battery tender!!! significantly adds to its service life.

I have a '06 SG and had a similar experience. At first the problem was intermittent, I changed the battery and thought all was well but after a short time the problem returned, bought the battery for nothing. I wound up replacing the stator and regulator and all has been well since and that was a few years ago.

Default So far, so good

Just put about 50 miles on it and no problems. No bobble in voltage and it ran great. I will be watching the voltage a little closer for the next few rides but for now I am good. Have a good weekend and stay safe.
