Default Dyno Blues

Long Story, short version. I bought a 2011 Streetglide in March of 2011. After 3000 miles, I had a stage 1 installed in June 2011. (SE/AC, SEPST, V&H Chrome Propipe, Dyno Tuned) All this was done at a HD Dealer South of where I live. It was running great and I was pretty happy with it.

In October 2011, I got rear ended by a Heritage Softail causing about 7500.00 in cosmetic damage to my Glide. (Yes, rear ended at about 40-45mph, fortunately there were no bad injuries) There was no Frame damage and the HD Dealer South of me repaired the damage, which the other guys insurance paid for. Start of problems for me here. After the repairs, I noticed some backfiring/popping on shifting and deceleration. I took the Glide back, and found out the replacement Propipe was a newer version and there was some differences from the old one. So I asked the Insurance Company to have it Dyno tuned again. They complied and it was Dyno'd again. Still, there was popping intermittently. Once again I went to the Dealer and after "tweaking" the numbers again on the Dyno, the Dealer stated they could do no more, and I should live with it.

I spoke with 2 different reps at V&H, and got 2 different answers. One said I needed a better Dyno tuner, another said some popping was normal.
So I bucked up 350.00 for another Dyno Tuning at a HD Dealer north of me. I was told that I would get a custom map. They would wipe the old tuning data and re install another map. Again, the bike was tuned and there is still popping going on. I took it back to this Tuner and he thinks the bike is fine. My Dyno numbers are lower after the second tune and the occurence of popping is less. But, it's still popping.

When I shift from 1-2 or 2-3, I'm getting a loud popp, sometimes even on decel. Loud enough it sometimes sounds like a gunshot. Other times I don't hear anything ??? My Next move is a trip to a Tuner by the name of Dyno Dave in St Louis. But, I'm getting a lot of $ invested into tuning and I'm worried it won't fix it. My other option is to dump my Propipe...

I'm lost at this point. Any advice would be appreciated.

Have you ruled out any kind of an intake or exhaust leak?

+1 for intake or exhaust leak, check nut and bolt or clamp on both systems

Default Exhaust leaks

Every Dyno I've asked to be checked for an exhaust leak. I was told gaskets are fine...

some popping is actaully normal especially with freer flowing pipes. as far as lower numbers every dyno is different so you have to take numbers with a grain fo salt unless it is noticable seat of the pants.

I had a Pro-Pipe on my carbed '04 FLHRS and Thunderheaders on my '10 FLHX and '11 FXDB.

I've never had a pop on shifts, and just have a burble on deceleration. It's all in the tune. Some dyno guys know what to do, some don't...

Default backfire

I had similar problems with a 2-into 1 V&H ProPipe, Popped etc...I contacted V&H and the tech. gave me some numbers for my tuner and I was good to go, no dyno. I did have a Fuel-Pak tuner but, either way they should be able to help you out over the phone.Goog luck.

With all the money that you are spending in tuning the bike, you may want to consider a different tuner such as the the Thundermax with autotune. Unfortunately, it is pretty expensive but it would be the last tune you need.

Check clamp where the muffler and head pipes meet as well. Also check for intake leaks.
