Default 6 Speed insert kit

I want to install a 6 speed insert kit into my EG standard. i have a kit that i purchased new with the 6 speed cover. Can anyone tell me the minimal set of tools required ( Must haves ) and the tools that would be nice to have. I am fairly mechanically inclined, ( just did a head job on my ( 95 - 6.5 turbo diesel with injector pump and turbo replacement), and think that this is not really all that difficult. I do have the parts manual, repair manual, and the instruction sheet with the kit. My 05 has about 5 k on it, would i really need to replace all of the bearings at this point or just the ones that are different?

I appreciate any help or suggestions.

Allen

I have not done the 6-speed kit, but I can tell you that these transmissions last for ever. If the bearings are the same between both kits and there is no metal in them, then I would just clean them and reuse them.

The kit should have pretty good directions and the service manual is only going to show you tear down and rebuild of a 5-speed. The primary system is going to have to be removed and that is not hard to put together. Just follow the service manual and you should be fine. I don't think you will need anything special to do the job. Harley likes to sell their tools and judging from the price of them, they are proud of them. I bought a primary chain tension check tool for 2 bucks on ebay and it works awesome for setting the primary chain tension.

Good luck and Ride Safe.

Default RE: 6 Speed insert kit

I just finished tearing down and reassembling the 5 speed on my '88 Electra Glide Sport and I can tell you that one tool I could have used is patience. It's not that bad, though. My tool box consists of all the standard stuff, wrenches, socket sets, multiple screwdriver types, allen wrenches and so on. There were a couple of large size sockets in half inch that I had to buy to remove nuts off of the gear shafts and I also borrowed a puller from work and that was about it. I didn't have to remove that bearing race that's on the clutch side, but of course they make a tool for that. The only thing that I'm considering getting for when I do my 6 speed upgrade is the side cover remover. I've seen those on ebay and in alot of the aftermarket parts catalogs that are listed on mandmcycles. Don't forget your loctite, also. Oh yeah and try to have patience. I'm the epitome of that saying about why is there never enough time to do things right, but always enough time to do things twice. Have fun and let me know how it goes.

Thanks for the input guys, i saw that side cove removal tool and may get one jut to make pulling the side cove an gear cluster easier.

The manuals call for a lot of tools but i am with you guys, i got all the std stuff and can probably do the job just fine with them. But , it is nice to get a second to make sure you dont get in over your head.

And patience is a good thing to have in your box.......
