Unhappy Installed Chrome forks, now brake problems?

Hi all,

I finally got around to installing the chrome fork kit my wife got for me this last Christmas on my 07 Streetglide. After getting it all together, I spun the front wheel by hand while the bike was up in the air and noticed that the breaks drag a little... .especially on the right hand side.

For example, hard spin with no calipers installed, wheel goes around 2-3 times
With calipers installed, goes around 1 time.

Is that right?

Additional data points:
  • The front wheel has never been taken off this bike since it was purchased.
  • Bike has 26K on it
  • Front brake pads have been changed once, I honestly don't remember how many miles ago that was
  • I've verified that I have installed the tire with the stem to the right (as described in the shop manual) and that the arrow on on tire is going forward.
  • FWIW, the front rotors were installed on this bike from the factory backwards (right side rotor is on the left side of the while and vice versa..) I repeat that the front wheel has never been off this bike till now, so I **KNOW** it came from the factory like this when I purchased the bike brand new. I guessing this is not really a problem and that it's more important that the pads and rotor remain matched up throughout the life of the pad.
  • The right hand brake seems to be the one dragging as I can take off the caliper and the problem goes away.
  • The dragging is constant all the way around so I don't believe the rotors are warped.
If the stock brake system is a floating system, that might explain the the slight drag, but I can't seem to confirm one way or the other if the bike came stock with "floating" rotors. (Yes, I know, that HD floaters are different from 3rd party rotors...)

Thoughts?

Did you mix up the wheel spacers on the reinstall? I believe the short one goes on the right side and did you tighten the axle nut to HD's specs? Over tightening may make a difference here.

I've checked that more times than I care to count.. So I'm pretty confident that I didn't mix them up. Add to that, where I think the rub is coming from is the inside pad of the right caliper. If I put the long one in there, it would force the wheel a hair to the left and would then have more pressure on that pad.

Is anyone aware of shims for the caliper?
Any other ideas?

Ok, so.. Can someone confirm, did the bike come stock with floating brakes? That might explain the problem...

If the bike was bought brand new I don't believe that they came with full floaters. I have an 05 RK and when I installed my chrome legs I bought and installed chrome full floaters also.
