installed chrome rims and tires, all went great but now i have brakes SOMETIMES. bled em over and over and it seems to be good then POW pedal goes!!! have bled them several times even with a vacum bleeder. all is fine then i move bike or go for a ride and they seem to go. i can pump them and they come back....roll the bike and maybe it stays maybe pedal goes.......ahhhahhh what gives.....any ideas?????
Chances are you bent the rotor during your tire and wheel swap. The bent rotor is pushing the pads away from the rotor when you ride or push the bike. Then your first pump (or two...) brings the pads back to the rotor and subsequent pumps feel normal.
I'm not saying with absolute certainty that this is your problem, but it's a definite possibilty, and since the problem began when you changed the wheel/tire it's a very probable cause.
Jack up the rear wheel, depress the brake pedal and release, have someone rotate the wheel while you observe the brakes pads for movement. That should give you a rough idea of what's going on.
Also, if you have a dial indicator you can measure the rotor runout.
If you dont have access to a dial indicator you could rig up a pointer out of a coat hanger or something similar to determine the runout. Get it to sit in light contact with high point of the rotor, rotate the wheel and see how much space you get between the rotor and the pointer with a feeler gauge. Obviously this may not be as accurate as the indicator, but done with care it can get you close.

I second the rotor pushing the pads in issue. Although I am thinking, if the rotor is not warped, the wheel face, where the rotor bolts on, is not squared with the axle. If that is the case it was machined wrong and would need the wheel replaced. If you do have excessive runout on your rotor, remove it and straightedge it on a flat surface. If its straight then remount the wheel back on the bike, without the rotor, and do a runout check of the wheel face where the rotor normally would be. If you still have the excessive runout, wheel replacement time.

Good call. And along the same line of thought, be sure to look for a burr or chip on the rotor or the wheel that could be affecting the normality of the rotor to the wheel.

Did you ever figure out what was causing your problem?
Thanks
not figured it out yet. bike is 07 flhtc no abs and the lines were not opened. gonna look at runout and see if everything is true today. dang it......looks good but cant show it off yet
