Yarvis, welcome to the touring forum! I went from a low rider to a street glide just about 2 months ago and never looked back. My 7" freedom shield should be in this week so i will let you guys know how i like the change...this is my first mod as the buffeting is horrible in my case, i will take function over looks on this one. Also look into a seat that is comfy for the wifea as well.
Lastly what dealer are you looking at trade/buy from? I was in staten island hd and had the salesman at 20,200 otd with vivid black just had no cruise...i opted for an 11 fully loaded w/600 miles for a lot less from NJ. Good luck and happy riding!!
Folks, just wanted to introduce myself and ask a few questions about the SG. Name is Yarvis, 40 something from NYC. Been riding bikes since 1982. Currently own two very cool and different bikes. (well to me anyway) A 2001 BMW R1200c and a 2006 HD VRSCD Night Rod. Thinking about trading the NR for a 2012 Blue pearl SG with ABS . Two dealers willing to give me $7600 in trade for my night rod and sell me the SG for 21k . No freight or prep. No one other than these two dealers has done better in both price for new bike and for trade. So if I bite this bullet, what are decent pipes and tuner to use that WONT break the bank? Any other "must haves" that I can do that also won't break the bank?

Firstly, the SG is a great choice. It's the best-selling HD in the Touring line.
Secondly, don't pay any more than MSRP OTD.
Thirdly, I agree with most of the suggestions for add-ons, but I would urge you to ride your SG first. It will tell YOU what it needs.

I got one qoute from a dealer in PA on the outskirts of Philly, Smaltz HD. I actually used this dealer for my Night Rod pipes, race tuner and dyno. Excellent pricing, service and actually care about their customers. They knew I was coming from NYC and took me right in, took their time and did a great job. Oh yes, gave me the BEST prices as well for all of the work.
The other dealer is right over the bridge from me in NJ. I would rather not say the name right now as we are still negotiating and want to be fair to them and myself. Will say that they matched my price from PA and I was surprised they did. I'm not crazy about their service or policies concerning dyno's. (they want you to sign waivers stating if they blow up your bike in their dyno room, you don't hold them responsible! WTF?) . Unfortunately, my 21k price does not include our overpriced sales tax of 8.375%, but I do get the color choice of blue pearl, ABS and security.
I had the dealer in Staten Island fix a problem on my night rod while under warranty and I was appreciative. When I went to pick up my bike several days later, I noticed something on my bike that someone there was trying to hide or coverup until I caught it. They took the part off of another bike (thank goodness they had a night rod back then) on the showroom floor. I have never gone back. I do my own oil changes and or had a buddy who was working on V-Rods in his garage when he was married.

Believe me when I say, I'm the ultimate haggler. I just have not been able to get ANYONE to discount this bike for less than 21k for the blue pearl abs and security AND give me what I feel is a fair price for my trade. I could probably sell my bike for $8500-9000 privately, I'm getting $7600 for it from the dealer. Trading to dealer actually gives me a better tax advantage close to $8200 which is close to what I would settle for privately.
Pretty much what One Up said. Windshield, windshield pouches, highway pegs, and exhaust. Love what I bought. Bub7 slips, Power Commander V, and SE A/C. You will also have a cat to worry about that I didn't. Everything else you'll notice and see on other bikes.

So if these new bikes have cats or oxygen sensors, what does this mean when buying pipes, slip ons and or power commanders? Will I be limited to one or two brands? If I go with this bike, I'm not one for loud pipes, when I did do the pipes on my night rod I went with D&D slip ons, not to loud and reasonably priced. Have others here done just slip ons?
A lot, I won't say most, exhaust mfgs make slip-ons. If you're going that route, and add a free-flowing exhaust, don't forget your air cleaner. That should be opened up as well. The dealer can do a stage one upgrade for you, including flashing the ECM, which I gather you're at least somewhat familiar with. I think most would agree that you will want some kind of tune after that, and one of the sponsors here, Jamie of Fuelmoto, sells the Power Commander line of products, and from all reports, is great to deal with, and will provide you a custom map for your set-up, where possible. A place to start, anyway. Have fun.

I'm sure you know the slips, module, and intake go hand in hand. There are tons of slips to chose from with many differences in sound and looks, and performance. D&D again for example. Cat is in the header pipe. If you have the money I think the V&H Power Duel headers are incredible. If not, then do a search in this forum and I bet it has been discussed. I bet you could punch out the cats from your stock header and have a great header. '09(my year) they did new headers and I really like'em so I kept them. They might be exactly the same as yours except the cat.

Personally, I would not let the cat factor into my decision for performance upgrades. The cat is an integral part of the design and manufacturers know it and have designed their products accordingly.
Regarding slip-ons and fuel management systems, choose what YOU like.
