Happened to me a few months ago my stator burned out and I could smell it when I took the derby cover off. For what I'm reading about the 12's there was a big batch of bad VR's.
Was able to get the DTC's out of the dash usin a procedure found here on the forum.....and was a "P0562 Battery Voltage Low".....Not sure if I put in prior message, it IS the original battery.....from March '07 purchase......had a battery waitin to go in it and jus' hadn't gotten around to it..(had a feeling it would not last too much longer...age etc..)....Need to check that the VR is operating correctly too I guess so I don't go eatin' another battery prematurely....As well as get my meter out and go across the terminals and get a voltage reading......will keep posted....and thanks ........
just got my voltage regulator replace on my 2012 streetglide with 500 mile on it. There is a service bulletin out. If it is not a safety issue harley does not sent it to owners just the dealer.

does this service bulletin have a number? my 2012 is having similar issues.

Thanks.
The letter I received from HD in July 2012 referred to "Product Program 0912" if that helps you.
I had the voltage regulator replaced on my 2012 Road King at no charge in the summer of 2012 under this program. The letter says the no cost offer expires on June 11, 2014.
I read a thread on here a few days ago, that I can't find now, that said if the voltage is low it is the stator and if the voltage is high it is the voltage regulator. Removing the derby cover and smelling will tell you if the stator is toast. The voltage gauge jumping up will tell you it's the voltage regulator.
Pull the engine the trouble codes. That can help give you a direction to look.
I have had a HD tech/service manager tell me high voltage is regulator, low voltage is stator.
So I see this has popped up again. However, the last two weeks I am having issues again. Pulled in the garage this afterrnoon with under 8 volts on the gauge. Was sweating it for sure. Of course, mine was replaced years ago under warranty, but the dealership is stating that this counts for the service bulletin. So, I figured that mine was replaced so early, that thy must have an updated unit to install now. Of course, the new one is $200 at the dealership.
I have looked at some on the web, and found one on Ebay for under $90, but I am just not sure. Does anyone know how to test one? I looked in the service manual, and it only give replacement instructions, not troubleshooting.
