Most Garmin's take 5v but draw more current than a standard 500mA converter that you can find for charging cell phones etc.
I bought a DC/DC converter (http://parts.digikey.com/1/parts/186...1-5-w36-c.html), wired it to a USB cable that fit my Garmin, ran the cable through the handlebar gromet between the fairing and the handlebar and cable tied it and velcro'd to the handlebar.
I put the DC/DC converter inside a gutted car key fob I had and drilled a hole in the stub of the metal part of the key (after cutting off most of the key). I attached the fob to a small bolt inside the fairing. The voltage to the fob is supplied from the switched supply (ACC) switch, so I can turn it on and off.
The DC/DC converter is an integrated switched converter so little energy waste/draw.

That Powerlett deal looks neat. I just plugged mine into the cig plug in the fairing. No it doesn't hit anything when the wheel is turned all the way to the left.
