Went to shine the girl up and surface feels rough, kinda like dust stuck on surface. Even after a good cleaning and Polish. I've never used a clay bar, this one of those times I should use one? Anything I need to know about it?
Yeah, it sounds like it. You can especially tell if you run panty hose over the surface, if it snags then there are contaminants embedded in the clearcoat. It's really easy to use clay bars, the instructions that come with them should explain it pretty well. Use the included lube and just keep folding the clay over as you work so you don't scratch the clear coat with the contaminants that get trapped in the clay.
I usually just use a clean piece of clay as I am washing the bike using the soap suds as the lubricant- then rinse the soap along with the contaminents off all at once

I've used it on my bike and truck. It does what is says. Follow the instruction and you will be happy with results.
I worked with the company that originally introduced the clay bar ( Auto Magic ) out of Texas. The demo we used to do was take the cellophane from a pack of smoke and rub it across the surface prior to using the clay bar...it picked up all the imperfections...then use the bar and do it again...never lost a sale. The bar will take all the surface imperfections off if used correctly. Follow up with your favorite wax.
Just don't dare even think of re-using the clay bar if you drop it on the ground! Throw it away and get a fresh piece of clay! I've read about some folks who messed up their paint after clay-barring it after having a few beers.
