Put a S&S T111 in my 04 Road King Custom, got about 400 miles of break in time on it and it up and died on me the other day. It turns over and I get spark but doesn't fire.
Fuel in the tank, changed plug wires, changed crank position sensor, batteries good. It has the S&S VFI module, what are the chances of that being bad??
Am I missing something here?
It the bike throwing codes? Are you sure the fuel line is pushed all the way in at the bottom of the tank? Those are known to look connected but be disconnected. Is the VFI module a piggyback type? I'd remove it after making sure that fuel line is connected and see what happens.
Whats an S&S T111?
When you turn ignition on, does fuel pump kick in? Should run for 2 seconds every time ignition is turned on.
Then if that checks out, yes disconnect VFI and see if it runs.
To check for code; Turn ignition on, count to 3. Turn off, count to 3. Turn on, count to 3, turn off, count to 3. Turn back on, count to 8, and watch the check engine light. If there are any codes, will flash rapidly, count the flashes, that is the first number, will be a 1 second pause followed by more flashes, that is the second number. If you have the manual, look to see what it is, or come back here with the code, someone will likely look it up for you.
It's a S&S Twin Cam 111 Cubic inch motor. Fuel line in, pump kicks in. The motor comes with a new S&S ECM, it replaces the stock harley one. Check for engine codes and get "no rsp". Go to fire it up and get a back-fire and that's it. Thanks for the suggestions.
Only two things I could think of off hand;
1) Try a new set of plugs. Sometimes plugs will spark when outside the motor, but under compression they just don't cut it.
2) Spray bottle with gas. Have a hose, or fire extinguisher handy. Basicaly your just bypassing the injection unit. Pull air cleaner and see if you can get it to run off the spray bottle.
Beyond that, not really sure what to tell you. Seeing as how you can get no codes from ECM, it is just a crap shoot. Is there any literature with the S&S unit that gives you a place to start with diagnostics?
- dribble a little fuel into the manifold with the a/c off to see if you can get the bike to fire. If so - chances are your not getting fuel to the injectors.
A hose may have come loose inside the tank. Also check to see if you hear the normal fuel pump pressurization cycle when turning on the ignition.
Thanks to all for the help! I don't think it's a fuel problem, put in new plugs but nothing. Pulled the rear and it was wet with gas. Funny thing is I grounded it to my engine guard and hit the starter to see if I was still getting spark and it sounded like the front cylinder wanted to fire. Could it be a grounding issue?
You're probably going to have to bypass the ECM - which of course isn't possible. You should call S&S on Monday and let them know what's going on. From everything you're saying the ECM seems like the prime suspect . . .
Check all the obvious stuff first - fuses, grounds, etc.
